With the recent release of Matt Reeves’ highly anticipated new addition to the Batman franchise, The Batman, what better time to take a look at some of the director and producers’ best film and television work throughout his career, according to Rotten Tomatoes.

Reeves has developed quite a name for himself in the sci-fi and action genres throughout the last ten to twenty years being involved in successful franchises like Cloverfield, Planet Of The Apes, and now Batman.  Audiences couldn’t be more excited to see his new dark and dreary take on the masked vigilante as fans have had high hopes for the film for quite some time now.

10 The Cloverfield Paradox (2018) – 21%

The Cloverfield Paradox is a sci-fi horror film about a group of scientists orbiting the earth in an attempt to solve an energy crisis, but they end up coming face to face with a dark alternate reality.  The Cloverfield Paradox is executive produced by Matt Reeves and the most recent addition to the Cloverfield franchise.

It’s by far the weakest title in the franchise, and Reeves’s filmography, as many fans felt confused by the convoluted narrative and special effects, which have aged poorly even in such a short space of time. However, the film does feature decent performances from David Oyelowo and Chris O’Dowd.

9 The Pallbearer (1996) – 45%

The Pallbearer is a romantic comedy about a young man’s life being thrown for a loop as he’s asked to be the pallbearer at a funeral for a classmate he doesn’t remember at the same time his old crush has returned to town. The film stars David Schwimmer, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Michael Rapaport, and is a fairly standard entry into the 90s rom-com lexicon.

The Pallbearer was the first feature film Matt Reeves wrote and directed, and is one of the last romantic comedies he worked on. He hasn’t returned to the genre since finding his niche in action and sci-fi.

8 The Yards (2000) – 64%

The Yards is a crime drama about a man being released from prison whose plans on going straight quickly fall apart when he meets up with his corrupt uncle and old friend. The film slipped under the radar considering its absolutely incredible cast, including Mark Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix, Charlize Theron, and James Caan.

Matt Reeves wrote and co-produced the film while he was still relatively early in his career, but working with director James Grey proved to be a great learning experience considering the success of his later work.

7 Cloverfield (2008) – 78%

Cloverfield is a sci-fi horror film with plenty of action. It’s about a group of friends venturing deep into the streets of New York on a rescue mission as a giant monster rampages and attacks the city.

The film was a sleeper hit in the found footage genre, using the style to add to the authenticity of the film. The unique marketing campaign, detailed by Little White Lies, had moviegoers extremely curious and also contributed to the success of the film. Cloverfield has some incredible filmmakers behind it as it’s written by Drew Goddard, produced by J.J. Abrams, and directed by Matt Reeves.

6 Tales From The Loop (2020) – 86%

Tales From The Loop is a sci-fi drama about people living in a town above ‘the loop,’ a machine built to unlock and explore the mysteries of the universe, experience unexplainable things.  Tales From The Loop is an Amazon Prime original show that’s executive produced by Matt Reeves and is the only television show featured in his top ten on Rotten Tomatoes.

Many fans consider it one of the most underrated shows of 2020 as its special effects and visual aesthetic were truly unique and thought-provoking. The show stars Paul Schneider, Jonathan Price, and Rebecca Hall.

5 The Batman (2022) – 86%

The Batman is Matt Reeves’s newest addition to DC’s legendary superhero franchise, starring Robert Pattinson in the titular role of Bruce Wayne/Batman as well as Paul Dano, Zoey Kravitz, and Colin Farrell.  The film is a darker crime drama about a relatively young Bruce Wayne as he faces off against the Riddler, who has begun murdering key political figures in Gotham.

Matt Reeves wrote, directed, and produced the movie that takes inspiration from a myriad of films, including the work of David Fincher, as outlined by Variety.

4 Let Me In (2010) – 88%

Let Me In is a horror drama about a young boy who experiencing bullying befriending a young female vampire who lives in secrecy with her guardian.  The film is a remake of the Swedish horror classic, Let The Right One In, and is definitely a fan favorite among Reeves’ work despite how beloved the original is.

Reeves wrote and directed the dark and creepy yet oddly touching and sweet film. Let Me In features outstanding performances from Chloe Grace Moretz, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Richard Jenkins.

3 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) – 90%

10 Cloverfield Lane is the mysterious sequel to Cloverfield about a young woman being held in an underground bunker by an older man who believes a hostile event has left the world uninhabitable. The film is executive produced by Matt Reeves and directed by Dan Trachtenberg.

10 Cloverfield Lane is the highest-rated film in the Cloverfield franchise as fans absolutely loved the claustrophobic narrative and incredible performances by both John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead.  Fans have even cited this as one of Winstead’s best roles.

2 Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (2014) – 90%

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is an action-adventure drama about a growing nation of genetically evolved apes threatened by one of the last groups of human survivors after a deadly virus was unleashed a decade earlier.

Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes is the second film in the reboot series for the classic Planet Of The Apes franchise.  Matt Reeves took over directorial duties from Rupert Wyatt and really elevated the franchise. It also features series lead Andy Serkis’ incredible motion-capture performance, as well as Gary Oldman in one of his best movies to date.

1 War For The Planet Of The Apes (2017) – 94%

War For The Planet Of The Apes is Matt Reeves’ epic conclusion to the reboot series of the Planet Of The Apes franchise. The film is about Ceaser and his group of genetically modified apes dealing with loss after the events of the second film and grappling with their own darkness as they set out for vengeance.

This is the only film in the franchise that Reeves both directed and wrote, and it’s widely considered the best in the series by fans due to the incredible motion-capture performances, great script, and amazing special effects.  Reeves truly proved himself when it comes to big-budget action movies that are part of large and beloved large franchises.
