We all have a variety of emotions in our heads that control how we feel, and the Disney Pixar movie Inside Out (2015) gave us a glimpse of a few of them. Anger, Disgust, Fear, Joy, and Sadness live inside nine-year-old Riley’s head, and they help her to make choices and cause her to feel different things.

Each emotion did their fair share for Riley, and while some led to good things, other actions were less than helpful. We took the time to review everything the five emotions did during the span of the movie and put together the good and the bad.  Here are the best and worst things done by Inside Out‘s emotions!

10 Worst: Anger – Decides Riley Should Run Away

Riley and her family have moved to San Francisco, and things have been terrible from the start. The local pizza has broccoli on it, Riley had a bad first day at school, and Joy and Sadness are missing from Headquarters!

Seeing as the core memories are gone and the islands of personality are collapsing one by one, Anger comes up with the idea to go back to Minnesota to make more core memories. This means stealing the credit card from mom’s purse, skipping school, and running away. Not your best idea, Anger!

9 Best: Anger – Provides Comic Relief

Anger may have a short temper and get easily annoyed, but he’s also pretty funny. With his unique flavors of sarcasm and amusing sense of humor, he had us laughing throughout the whole movie, which was much needed during the suspenseful uncertainty that the plot brought.

Whether it’s announcing the arrival of the mom bad news train – toot! toot! – or jokingly suggesting they go down to the elephant lot to rent an elephant to get back to Minnesota (“We’re taking the bus, nitwit!”), we think Anger deserves his own stand-up show.

8 Worst: Disgust – Gets Moody With Mom And Dad

With Joy (and Sadness) missing from Headquarters, the three remaining emotions are at a bit of a loss. When Fear comes up with the idea that the three of them just need to act like Joy, Disgust is the first one at the console while Riley has dinner with her parents.

Riley manages to sit at the table in silence until Mom asks her about playing hockey. Disgust tries to say that it sounds fantastic, but it ends up sounding sarcastic and rude. This just starts the attitude that leads to a blow-up at mom and dad. Not cool!

7 Best: Disgust – Saves Joy And Sadness

Just when things seem that they can’t get any worse after Riley runs away, Joy finally figures out how to get back to Headquarters! She and Sadness crash land with a splat against the window, and they are hanging onto the edge for dear life! It doesn’t seem like there’s a way to get in, but then Disgust comes up with a plan on the spot.

She decides to irritate Anger to fire him up, and then she uses the flame on his head to burn through the glass of the window. After that, she and Fear are able to pull Joy and Sadness to safety!

6 Worst: Fear – Wakes Up Riley During A Bad Dream

Fear is on Dream Duty for the night, and it doesn’t seem like the job that the emotions fight to have. Down in Dream Production, Sadness and Joy, along with Bing Bong, are working to wake Riley up. Joy thinks they should make Riley so happy that she wakes up, but Sadness thinks they should scare her.

With the help of Jangles the clown, they try to wake up Riley. On Dream Duty, Fear gets so scared that he wakes Riley up and then promptly passes out. Now that Riley is awake, Anger decides to take control and put the runaway plan into action. So much for sleeping on it!

5 Best: Fear – Tries To Talk Anger Out Of His Idea

We know that Anger comes up with the Happy Core Memory Development program (aka the plan to run away), but Fear does not go along with it right off the bat. He can’t believe that Anger would suggest doing something so drastic! Fear is sure Anger must be joking, but the little red guy is 100% serious!

He reminds Fear and Disgust that their life was perfect prior to the move, and Riley was so happy back in Minnesota. Fear says that they should at least wait until morning before making any decisions. Riley does end up running away, but at least Fear tried his best!

4 Worst: Joy – Pushes Sadness Out Of The Recall Tube

Joy and Sadness have been trying to figure out how to get back to Headquarters to no avail. After seeing some memories fly up a recall tube, the two get the idea that they can be recalled back up to Headquarters. Joy climbs in the tube first, along with the bag of core memories, but when Sadness tries to get into the tube alongside her, the memories start to turn blue.

Joy pushes Sadness away and selfishly decides that she will go to Headquarters alone, leaving Sadness behind. “Riley needs to be happy,” she says, closing the tube off.

3 Best: Joy – Encourages Sadness To Help Riley

Joy has been desperately trying to keep Sadness from causing trouble. She’s having some difficulty seeing Sadness’ purpose, as all the blue emotion seems to do is make Riley feel sad, which Joy views as a bad thing. Joy tried to keep Sadness in her own circle to keep away from the memories and the control board, but she eventually realizes that sometimes in order to feel happy, Riley has to feel sad first.

Because of this understanding, Joy tells Sadness that Riley needs her in order to go back home. Joy then hands Sadness the core memories and allows her to help Riley to reconnect with her family.

2 Worst: Sadness – Keeps Touching Memories

Lately, Sadness has been very curious about the memories. She wants to hold them and touch them, but that causes them to permanently turn blue. At one point, she even tries to fix one of the core memories that looks crooked in its case, but this causes it to fall out!

When she and Joy get sent to long term memory, Sadness still struggles to not touch the memories, changing many of them to blue as she passes by. It doesn’t matter how many times she gets reminded not to touch them; she still can’t help herself, much to Joy’s annoyance.

1 Best: Sadness – Brings Riley Back Home To Her Family

Sadness has trouble feeling useful to Riley, and Joy has managed to convince her that she only hurts Riley and makes everything worse. Sadness is very upset by this, and she’s ready to give up on getting back to Headquarters.

Joy manages to get them both back, and she tells Sadness that it’s up to her to fix the situation after Riley has run away. Sadness manages to get the idea out of Riley’s head, and she helps Riley to feel better once she’s back with her mom and dad.
