Almost 12 years after the initial release of Obsidian’s Fallout spin-off, Fallout: New Vegas, reports are circulating regarding a potential sequel. Microsoft is reportedly considering Fallout: New Vegas 2, and fans of the franchise have been holding out hope for quite some time that such a sequel could become a reality, thanks in large part to the overwhelmingly positive reception of Fallout: New Vegas, especially in recent years. In the eyes of many Fallout players, New Vegas is one of the most well-crafted titles in the series, if not the best Fallout game of all time. While it isn’t precisely apparent yet just how well-founded the speculation is, that hasn’t stopped excitement from growing.

First announced in 2009, Fallout: New Vegas was developed by Obsidian Entertainment after Bethesda’s 2004 purchase of the Fallout license and, more specifically, the critical and commercial success of the Bethesda and fan-favorite Fallout 3 in 2008. New Vegas took the series back to the West Coast, and many of the developers attached to earlier Fallout games played a hand in its production, perhaps helping to explain why so many Fallout fans favor New Vegas‘ storytelling over that seen in Bethesda’s Fallout titles like Fallout 4. In addition, the game’s immersive roleplaying, iconic characters, and memorable dialogue have helped make a name for New Vegas well over a decade after it came out.

Given the popularity of Fallout: New Vegas, it’s no surprise that this isn’t the first time a sequel has been rumored to exist. A speculative sequel developed by Bethesda not titled Fallout: New Vegas 2, but instead Fallout: New Orleans, was discussed as early as 2017, and when Fallout 76 was initially teased a year later, many fans hoped it would be revealed as an Obsidian-led follow-up to New Vegas. Later that year, Obsidian’s acquisition by Microsoft revived the discussion, and in 2020, Microsoft’s similar purchase of license-holder Bethesda lent more weight to the possibility. Now, a new report has emerged that claims Microsoft is seriously considering the idea of Fallout: New Vegas 2, though such a project may still be years away.

Is Fallout: New Vegas 2 Possible Thanks To Microsoft?

The report comes from journalist Jeff Grubb, who has reliably reported on previous unannounced titles over the years. Grubb reported on Microsoft’s discussions of Fallout: New Vegas 2 on his GiantBomb show Grubsnaxx, revealing that there seemed to be genuine interest from both Microsoft and Obsidian, though talks are apparently still in very early stages. Even then, Bethesda is busy prioritizing the development of Starfield, after which the studio’s focus will presumably be shifted to the likely Xbox-exclusive Elder Scrolls 6. Fallout 5, which has at least been confirmed to be in the works as far as planning goes, will probably follow soon after. It’s unclear exactly how this would impede Obsidian’s development of Fallout: New Vegas 2, but it may be unlikely that Microsoft would be willing to release two separate Fallout games in such a short window.

Given how little has been discussed about the details of Fallout: New Vegas 2 at the moment, it’s hard to say where exactly it would take place or what story it would follow. There’s been no word about how a New Vegas sequel could continue the plot of its predecessor either. Some fans have speculated that New Vegas 2 could move further West into California or feature the return of popular characters like Yes Man. However it ends up progressing, it’s clear that even just the concept of a Fallout: New Vegas sequel has generated quite a bit of excitement, and plans for the future of the Fallout franchise looks exciting thanks to Microsoft.
