Amazon’s Alexa smart speakers and devices routinely go on sale, but there are specific times of the year when they are cheaper than usual. Whether it’s worth holding out for these annual sales events will depend on how urgently the device is needed, as well as its overall cost to begin with. As some Alexa speakers are priced to be affordable, it may not always be worth waiting for a major price drop.

Smart speakers and devices powered by the Alexa voice assistant can be great additions to a smart home setup. As these Amazon devices are capable of acting as a smart home hub, they allow the user to command and control many other smart home products. Not only are more third-party devices always gaining Alexa support, but Alexa itself also routinely gets new features while improving others, resulting in an even richer experience each year.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Arguably, the very best time of the year to pick up a cheap Amazon Echo Dot or any other Alexa speaker is Prime Day. This is Amazon’s own annual sales event and the company tends to use the occasion to heavily promote its own products and devices. As a result, all of Amazon’s first-party products, including Alexa devices, tend to be at their lowest prices of the year during Prime Day. In addition to lowering the price, Amazon typically also offers the opportunity to bundle its devices with other smart home products, providing consumers with another way to save.

Is It Worth Waiting For Prime Day?

Amazon’s Prime Day can be a great way to save on Alexa smart speakers and devices and holding out to maximize those discounts is likely to be worth it. However, that might not be the case for every consumer. For starters, Prime Day only happens once a year. Depending on when a consumer is looking to buy, the wait for the next Prime Day could be some time away. Generally speaking, Prime Day usually takes place around July each year, although 2020’s Prime Day was delayed until October due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Amazon has yet to confirm when Prime Day 2021 will happen, whether it will return to its usually mid-year spot, or whether it will happen later in the year and closer to Black Friday/Cyber Monday once again. Speaking of which, the Black Friday weekend is also another time when big Alexa savings are on offer.

Besides not knowing when Prime Day is going to happen this year, how cheap an Alexa speaker is going to be depends on the speaker. The current Amazon Echo Dot is priced at $49.99 and although last year’s Prime Day saw the price of the previous Echo Dot drop to as low as $18.99, the latest one comes with many changes, including a new design. Amazon may have dropped the Prime Day 2020 price as low as it did to clear stock of the older model. With less changes expected this year, the price of the Echo Dot may not drop quite as much during Prime Day 2021. Not to mention, Amazon routinely drops the price of these speakers throughout the year, so consumers may find they can pick one up today at a cheaper price than usual.
