The Big Bang Theory experienced many changes throughout its twelve seasons. The show’s characters matured considerably over the years, going from immature and socially inept bachelors to mature and responsible husbands and fathers.

The show’s main couples became more important as the show went on, to the point where most of the later seasons focused on relationship drama. Indeed, while Big Bang‘s main couples were generally stable and functional, they still had their fair share of trouble throughout the show’s 279 episodes. They always managed to resolve them, but some were more difficult than others.

Raj Putting Too Much Pressure On Lucy

Raj is The Big Bang Theory‘s unluckiest character when it comes to love. He ends the series alone, still trying to find someone who’s as in love with love as he is. He has several relationships throughout the show, but the most meaningful are with Lucy, Emily Sweeney, and Anu.

Lucy is a shy woman whose social anxiety surpasses Raj’s. The two go out for a while and manage to get along, mainly thanks to Raj’s constant efforts to make the relationship work. However, Raj and Lucy were doomed from the start because their interests and desires were too different. Things end when Lucy gets overwhelmed by the relationship because Raj keeps putting pressure on her. She ends things with him, leaving Raj broken-hearted.

Leonard & Priya Cheating On Each Other

In hindsight, Priya was probably Leonard’s perfect match. She is Raj’s sister who sleeps with Leonard every time she visits California. The two eventually begin a serious relationship, much to Penny and Raj’s chagrin. However, the two are wonderful together: they’re cultured, intelligent, and willing to compromise for each other’s sakes.

Things get complicated when she leaves for India at the end of season four. Leonard and Priya try to make things work long-distance, but they can’t save their relationships. Leonard flirts with a woman he meets at the comic book store and kisses her. Guilty, he confesses to Priya, only for her to reveal she also cheated by sleeping with her ex-boyfriend, effectively ending their relationship.

Anu Moving To London Without Raj

Anu is Raj’s last serious relationship in The Big Bang Theory. They begin dating after he accepts his father’s offer to arrange a marriage for him. However, it turns out that Raj and Anu have many things in common and are actually attracted to each other. Their arranged relationship blossoms into something real, to the point where Raj considers leaving the US when she receives a job offer in London.

Raj eventually decides he can’t leave because, while he loves Anu, he isn’t in love with her, and the two part ways as friends. Still, it’s easy to see that, had Anu not moved to London, her relationship with Raj would’ve kept evolving, and the two would’ve actually fallen in love with each other and perhaps even married. Their separation is one of the saddest things that happened to poor Raj during The Big Bang Theory.

Raj & Emily’s Initial Meeting

In many ways, Emily Sweeney and Raj were perfect together. She loved all the things that others usually dislike about Raj, including his excessive femininity and overt sensitivity. Furthermore, she never tried to change him and accepted and loved him for who he was. The relationship was somewhat one-sided because, at times, it seemed like Raj was only with Emily because he didn’t want to be alone. Still, it’s impressive that the two even got together in the first place, considering how they met.

Raj and Emily meet through a dating site, but he asks Amy to reply for him. Amy and Emily get along and agree to go out for coffee, but Raj barges in to prove he’s not a passive guy; Emily gets creeped out, calls him a “weird guy with bo boundaries,” and leaves. It’s a cringe-worthy scene that showcases all that’s wrong with Raj’s character and the worst possible start to their relationship.

Howard & Bernadette’s Early Breakups

Arguably no character matures more throughout The Big Bang Theory than Howard Wolowitz. He goes from creepy and disrespectful man-child to mature and responsible husband and father of two, mainly because of his relationship with Bernadette. The two have a solid marriage, but that wasn’t always the case.

Early in their relationship, they break up after Bernadette catches Howard having virtual sex in World of Warcraft with a character called Gissinda the troll. Later, Bernadette considers canceling their wedding when she learns Howard had a threesome at Comic-Con with Raj and a girl dressed as Sailor Moon. They manage to overcome their problems, eventually becoming the best couple in the show.

Amy Breaking Up With Sheldon

Amy and Sheldon are happy in their own way. Their relationship is one of the mind rather than the body, at least initially. Amy learns how to deal with Sheldon’s quirks and challenging ways while he does his best to control his most extreme behaviors for her sake.

Their relationship faces its most difficult challenge when Amy breaks up with Sheldon after realizing he might never change. She tries dating while he does his best to win her back with one misguided attempt after the other. Their time apart makes both of them miserable and helps them realize how much they love each other. When they get back together, they do it with a newfound enthusiasm to make things work, leading to their eventual marriage.

Leonard Cheating On Penny

From the beginning, the show frames Leonard and Penny as the central couple. They spend the early seasons playing a will-they-won’t-they game until finally getting together for good in season five. Still, Leonard and Penny take their time before getting married, and when they finally decide to take that step, Leonard ruins it by revealing he once cheated on Penny by kissing a fellow researcher during his trip to the North Sea.

The revelation strains their relationship and pretty much ruins their wedding night. They conclude that Leonard confessed his transgression to Penny because he subconsciously wanted to sabotage their wedding. Their bond is stronger, and they manage to move past the mistake, enjoying their marriage without any more secrets or sabotage.
