The official trailer for The Black Phone has arrived, revealing the chilling new horror movie from Doctor Strange and Sinisterdirector Scott Derrickson. The Black Phone received a positive reception following its September 25, 2021, premiere at Fantastic Fest, but it won’t be releasing theatrically until February 4, 2022. Ethan Hawke stars in The Black Phone, alongside a supporting cast that includes Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, and James Ransone.

Based on a 2004 short story of the same name by writer Joe Hill, The Black Phone tells the story of a series of kidnappings in a small Colorado town in the 1970s. A serial killer known as The Grabber (Hawke) abducts and presumably kills five children before finding his sixth potential victim in Finney Shaw (Thames). Just when all hope seems lost, Finney discovers a chance at escape through mysterious and supernatural means.

That story is on full display in the new trailer for The Black Phone, which evokes recent horror films like It and Split. In the trailer, Finney is locked by The Grabber in a soundproof basement with a strange, disconnected black phone on the wall. Soon, Finney realizes that he can use the phone to talk to the killer’s previous victims, using their knowledge to formulate a means of escape. Hawke is positively terrifying as the serial killer, and the whole movie looks fraught with tension and a thick atmosphere. Check out the trailer for The Black Phonebelow.

Though Derrickson gained fame initially as a horror director, The Black Phone will be his first feature film in the genre since 2015’s Sinister 2. He took on the movie after leaving and being replaced by Sam Raimi on Doctor Strange 2, citing creative differences with Marvel Studios. With Blumhouse producing, The Black Phone will hopefully be a triumphant return to form for the director. Derrickson’s other work includes 2005’s The Exorcism of Emily Rose and 2014’s Deliver Us from Evil.

The Black Phone should also be an interesting entry in Hawke’s career. The film’s Fantastic Fest premiere yielded high praise for the Training Day star, and he looks absolutely frightening in the trailer, but a deranged serial killer isn’t the kind of character Hawke typically plays onscreen. The supernatural elements present in the trailer hint at something far more sinister in the background of Hawke’s character, especially given the curious line about the titular black phone being from The Grabber’s own childhood. Horror aficionados can catch The Black Phone in theaters on February 4, 2022.
