The MCU’s broken multiverse becomes all too real in a new promotional standee for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of MadnessThe anticipated film sees Benedict Cumberbatch return as Dr. Stephen Strange, a former neurosurgeon who became a Master of the Mystic Arts and keeper of the Time Stone in his debut movie. Also reprising their previous MCU roles are Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. Sam Raimi, who directed the original Spider-Man trilogy starring Tobey Maguire, returns to the Marvel fold to helm the film. The movie releases May 4.

The Doctor Strange sequel is part of the MCU’s Phase 4 and picks up after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. It is set to be a game-changer for the future of the entire cinematic franchise, as it is expected to definitively expand on the concept of the multiverse once and for all. After Strange’s botched spell in the recent Spider-Man movie, an opening in the multiverse allowed other characters from different timelines to enter the Sacred Timeline. In the recently released trailers, it seems that Strange will seek out Wanda to investigate and travel into different planes and dimensions.

More than two months before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness opens in theaters, the Marvel-Disney team is gearing up for an explosive premiere. Asad Ayaz, President of Marketing for Walt Disney Studios, shared a peek at a new promotional cinema standee for the upcoming film. It depicts Strange front and center, smashing the multiverse into shards like a broken mirror. The standee brings to life the movie’s posters, with the broken pieces bearing reflections of the movie’s characters. Check out the poster below:

The complicated concept of the multiverse was first hinted at in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, which contained a mention of alternate realities. It was also briefly introduced in the first Doctor Strange film by the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). Phase 4 of the MCU centers on the multiverse, having explored the ideas of altering reality and hopping between realities on Disney+’s WandaVision and Loki. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will likely tie the pieces together and provide fans with a deeper understanding of the intricacies of time, parallel worlds, and different realms.

Between its trippy visuals and mind-bending plot, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness serves as a gateway for more exciting things to come. After all, if a small slice into the multiverse has made it possible to have all three Spider-Man actors share the same screen, breaking it wide open plunges the MCU into infinite possibilities. Without a doubt, Marvel is now on top of its game doing what it does best: keeping fans coming back for more.
