Directed by Robert Rodriguez, The Faculty (1998) is a high school horror flick that follows a mismatched group of teens who suspect something is not right with the teachers at their high school. Despite a 55% Rotten Tomato rating, the film has a cult following and a permanent place as a must-watch in the scary movie lexicon.

The film draws influence from teen movies that addressed social hierarchies, like The Breakfast Club, as well as terror-inducing alien sci-fi flicks like TheThing. The film features a star-studded cast, many of whom have gone on to achieve international success starring in blockbuster franchises like Fast and Furious and The Lord of the Rings, and one cast member has even gone on to forge a successful music career.

Jordana Brewster

As the main female protagonist, Jordana Brewster appears as Delilah Profitt, queen bee cool girl with a football star boyfriend and editor of the school newspaper. Brewster started out in daytime television on As The World Turns. The Faculty was her feature film debut, and she continued to work consistently after its premiere.

Appearing both on television and in films, some notable projects include The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and a starring role as Elena Ramos in the 2012 reboot of Dallas. These days, fans know her best as Mia Toretto, one of the female leads in the Fast & Furious franchise.

Clea DuVall

Clea Duvall portrays Stokely ‘Stokes’ Mitchell, a goth loner and outcast at the school. Duvall followed her turn in The Faculty with consistent work and highly acclaimed performances in But I’m A Cheerleader, Argo, and Girl, Interrupted.

A starring turn in HBO’s under-appreciated Carnivàle led to other TV roles, including an award-winning performance on Veep. She is currently expanding beyond acting, having recently served as writer and director for Happiest Season and executive producer, writer, and voice actor for the Fox animated series HouseBroken. DuVall will also be a recurring character on the upcoming Viola Davis project, First Lady, on Showtime.

Josh Hartnett

Josh Hartnett appears in The Faculty as Zeke Tyler, the underachieving bad-boy who is able to stop the invasion with his street drug, “scat.” Hartnett quickly followed with a breakout role in Sofia Coppola’s The Virgin Suicides and then catapulted to success with big-budget blockbuster Pearl Harbor and critically acclaimed turns in Black Hawk Down and Black Dahlia.

After disappearing from the spotlight for a few years, he came back on the scene with a starring role in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful and most recently featured in Guy Ritchie’s new film, Wrath of Man.

Shawn Hatosy

As football star (and Delilah’s boyfriend) Stan Rosado, Shawn Hatosy brings sensitivity to the role of the resident jock in The Faculty. Hatosy has worked consistently over the last twenty years and has recently found great success on the small screen.

His role as police officer Sammy Bryant in Southland landed him a Critic’s Choice nomination for best-supporting actor. He currently stars as Andrew ‘Pope’ Cody, one of Animal Kingdom‘s most likable characters, and has stepped into the director’s chair for the series as well.

Salma Hayek

Salma Hayek is a frequent Rodriguez collaborator, starting with a sultry role in Desperado and cowboy vampire classic From Dusk Till Dawn. She appears in The Faculty as the dour Nurse Rosa Harper, who is attacked by Coach Willis in a terrifying scene.

Hayek is now an internationally regarded actress who has achieved critical acclaim, earning an Oscar nomination for her titular starring role in Frida (which she also produced) and nominated for an Emmy for her appearance on Ugly Betty. Most recently she can be seen as Pina Auriemma in Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci and an appearance in the star-packed Eternals.

Famke Janssen

Famke Janssen plays mousy teacher Miss Elizabeth Burke in The Faculty, aided by the classic trope of putting glasses on a model to make her seem dowdy. Miss Burke has a connection and uncomfortable student-teacher chemistry with bad boy Zeke.

Janssen followed The Faculty with House on Haunted Hill, another horror film, before achieving stardom with her role as Jean Gray in the X-Men franchise. She has a few projects coming soon, including Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac alongside Sean Bean.

Robert Patrick

As the ultimate “Hydro Homie,” Robert Patrick delivers an unforgettable performance as Coach Joe Willis, the very first of the faculty to arouse suspicion in the students. He is a stoic, frightful presence who brings a new dynamic to drinking water.

Most fans remember Patrick as T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgement Day, the Terminator sequel that still holds up today, or as John Doggett in The X-Files. He has appeared consistently in movies and TV, including turns on True Blood and The Sopranos. His upcoming project is HBO’s highly anticipated series The Peacemaker, releasing in January 2022.

Jon Stewart

Before he was a daily staple in the evening TV lineup, Jon Stewart was an up-and-coming comedian breaking into Hollywood. In The Faculty, he plays Professor Edward Furlong in what is considered one of Jon Stewart’s best dramatic roles.

After a long stint as host of The Daily Show, he took some time out of the spotlight to pursue humanitarian efforts, including opening an animal sanctuary with his wife in New Jersey. Jon is back in the public eye with the socially conscious The Problem With Jon Stewart, airing on Apple TV+.

Usher

Back before he became a mononymous international pop star, Usher was Usher Raymond, and did quite a bit of acting in addition to his musical pursuits. In The Faculty, he plays football player Gabe Santora.

Usher still acts, but his career as a musician is far more prolific. A bonafide superstar, he appeared as a special guest in the 2011 Super Bowl halftime show and has been a guest judge on The Voice. A philanthropy-themed reality show he was set to host this year was canceled amidst controversy, as reported by GQ. The eight-time Grammy winner is currently headlining a residency at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.

Elijah Wood

Elijah Wood plays Casey Connor, the first of the students to notice something awry. Nerdy and small, Casey experiences verbal and physical abuse from his classmates prior to his role in fighting the alien invasion.
