Fans of the long-running MTV reality series The Challenge are rightfully curious about how much money the players rake in. The show, which has been running since 1998 for a whopping 35 seasons features a cast of up to thirty contestants competing as pairs, teams, or individuals depending on the challenge. The tasks they must complete are difficult, to say the least, and sometimes, things get gruesome. There’s also plenty of drama, backstabbing, drinking, and flirtation that occur throughout the season. So, how much compensation do contestants actually get for diving in headfirst to the craziness?

When The Challenge first debuted, it was sold as a spin-off of two previously popular MTV series, Real World and Road Rules. The first few seasons featured former cast members from these two shows and put them head-to-head in even tougher challenges than they’d previously faced. As The Challenge continued airing, producers began to bring on former stars from other MTV series too, including some based abroad, such as Geordie Shore. Occasionally, the producers also bring on fresh talent that are new to the reality TV scene. All in all, there’s quite a mixture of personalities, which makes for awesome alliances and never-ending drama. Each season is a little different too, with a new theme introduced and often some changes made to the format and gameplay as well.

Diehard fans of The Challenge are likely already aware of these facts, but other viewers may be surprised to learn that every single contestant gets paid for appearing on the show. However, the compensation is by no means equally distributed among the cast. According to Showbiz CheatSheet, the newbies that producers throw into the mix only make $1,000 per week. While that’s not peanuts by any means, the contestants who make this much definitely aren’t getting rich from appearing on the show, unless of course, they go home with some prize money, too. It makes sense though that producers would compensate newbies less given that they’re unknown quantities who may not garner as much attention and popularity among viewers as the season plays out.

Next up on the tiered payment system are veterans of the reality TV empire, who are already recognizable to a degree but don’t have a huge following and fan base. These players make a weekly salary of between $3,000 and $5,000, which isn’t too shabby, especially if they’re able to stay in the competition for more than just a few weeks. Still, no one who is making that kind of weekly stipend is living large just off of that stipend alone. The real money they make will come from any prize money they win and/or promotional endorsements they are offered once they arrive back in the real world. Many players also appear in more than one season, giving them repeat opportunities to make money and gain popularity.

Making $5,000 per week probably sounds pretty appealing, but that’s nothing compared to the type of money that the big-time veterans make when they appear on The Challenge. Those players that are already hugely popular can make some serious cash just for appearing on the show. Just how much? According to Showbiz Cheatsheet and some interviews done with long-standing producer Justin Booth, the pay offered can be as high as $80,000 for the season, before any prize money is awarded. That means that whether they win or lose, those lucky contestants can guarantee that they’ll be walking home with a hefty chunk of change in their pockets.

The tiered system in place on The Challenge may be one that viewers have mixed opinions on, but the fact that everyone who competes on the show makes at least some money is definitely good news. The environment on the show is highly competitive and it seems nearly impossible not to get involved in the drama of it all. Any payment they get then is well earned, and the prize money that awaits whoever makes it all the way to the final challenge would be an additional delicious, expensive cherry on top.
