The Conners star Ames McNamara discusses the details of the big Mark twist in season 4, episode 10. The Conners has had a long journey to get into the shape it’s currently in. The series, which began its life as the popular sitcom Roseanne, originally ran for nine seasons from 1988 to 1997. A revival series of the same name aired on ABC in 2018, but was swiftly reworked after star Roseanne Barr stirred controversy on social media and was reborn later that year as The Conners, which follows the family after the sudden death of Roseanne.

On the most recent episode of The Conners, which aired on January 12, 2022, a major twist was unveiled. The episode, which was titled “Spills, Pills and The Midnight Lasagna,” included the reveal that Darlene’s buttoned-up son Mark (Ames McNamara) has secretly been taking his love interest Logan’s ADHD mediation as a way to handle his stress. This reveal is very in keeping with the common themes of the series, which frequently tackle the struggles of working-class families, including several previous Roseanne plot lines about substance abuse.

Speaking with CinemaBlend, McNamara discussed that pivotal twist in his character, who has been through a lot over the last couple of seasons. As an actor, he found it “really fun” to “showcase that there’s more to Mark than what we’ve been seeing.” The problems of the Conner family haven’t left him unaffected, and that stress trickling down along with the pressure of school has left him searching for a way to handle everything. While the path Mark is going down is a dark one, McNamara says that it’s coming from an “honest motivation” and desire “to really try and make a better life for himself.” Read the full quote below:

I think for one, it was really fun for me to sort of bring this different side to the character, and to get to showcase that there’s more to Mark than what we’ve been seeing. And I think he’s dealing with a lot of stress right now with school, and just all the other Conner problems are impacting him as well. I think that, even though, obviously what’s happening is what’s happening, there’s still motivation — this honest motivation behind it — to really try and make a better life for himself.

There is currently no plot description available for next week’s episode, which is titled “Patriarchs and Goddesses.” However, it seems inevitable that this reveal has set up Mark’s arc for the remainder of the season. Although the season has only been confirmed to continue through episode 12 so far, it seems entirely unlikely that they won’t run for 20 episodes like the previous two seasons.

Even though this plotline will challenge the family at the center of The Conners, McNamara has certainly shown that he’s up for the task. His family being forced to navigate their own problems to avoid negatively impacting their son’s life will certainly provide a lot of meaty material for McNamara to show off his chops. The character of Mark has seemed one way for so long that he finally has the chance to let loose and reveal the character’s inner life.
