Once upon a time there was a little clockwork golem, whom a friend named Canto even though, as a slave, he was not allowed to have a name. Well this hero seems to have made quite a big name for himself, as IDW Publishing announced that the quirky little children’s series by writer David Booher and artist Drew Zucker, will receive a new entry in its chronicles, continuing the adventures of the melancholy, yet determined toy-sized knight as he fights to rid the world of evil.

Originally published in 2019, Canto tells the story of the courageous little hero of a race of magical, mechanical men who resemble armored warriors. Sadly, in this fantasy world, Canto’s race of golems is enslaved, forced to perform harsh labor by a goat-like people who are in turn under the heels of a mysterious sorcerer known only as “The Shrouded Man,” who holds the hearts of every single golem, having replaced them with clockwork à la The Tin Woodsman. Influenced by Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz and Jeff Smith’s Bone, the series has received rave reviews for its simple, yet heartening approach to the classic hero narrative and the humble heroism of Canto himself.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Currently in the midst of its second miniseries following the one-shot Canto and the Clockwork Fairies, IDW announced over Twitter that the little clockwork knight-who-could will be receiving three new stories coming in 2022. They also released the cover art for the first of these, Canto & The City of Giants, which will likely feature the giant guardians of the City of Dis, who have abandoned their posts following the second volume. The City of Dis, named for the city of the damned found within Dante’s Inferno, is home to the Shrouded Man, who rules over a world enslaved from his Emerald Tower.

Canto is a familiar yet hard-hitting story about a world that seems on the brink of total dystopia, crushed under the heel of the Shrouded Man, who uses magic and misery to keep the many fantasy races of monsters in this world in check. While humans exist in this fantasy world, they are not the focus, and it is questionable as to whether or not any of them are capable of standing up to the evil of the Shrouded Man. In the current series, Canto II: The Hollow Men, which has yet to reach its conclusion, Canto is on a quest to save his race of clockwork golems after they begin dying out due to their former overlord’s magic.
