DreamWorks Animation reveals the cast and release date of their upcoming The Croods: Family Tree spinoff series along with a brand new trailer. The new series is inspired by the hit movie The Croods: A New Age and will premiere on Hulu and Peacock later this year. A New Age was a direct sequel to the original animated film, The Croods, which sparked an entire franchise after its release in 2013.

While The Croods received mixed reviews from critics, it still managed to gross over $587 million worldwide at the box office, making it the second highest-grossing DreamWorks Animation movie behind Kung Fu Panda. Based on the film’s success, the studio went on to produce the Netflix television series, Dawn of the Croods, which debuted on December 24, 2015, and ran for four seasons. The studio also premiered a sequel film, The Croods: A New Age, on November 25, 2020, which saw a total gross of over $215 million at the box office, although its reception was hindered by the coronavirus pandemic. Now it seems DreamWorks is giving the franchise another chance.

DreamWorks revealed a trailer for The Croods: Family Tree via their YouTube page along with additional information about the series. Accompanying the trailer, DreamWorks also unveiled the show’s cast, which consists of Kelly Marie Tran as Dawn; Amy Landecker as Ugga; Kiff VandenHeuvel as Grug; Ally Dixon as Eep; AJ Locascio as Thunk; Dee Bradley Baker as Sandy; Artemis Pebdani as Gran; Darin Brooks as Guy; Matthew Waterson as Phil; and Amy Rosoff as Hope. The series will release to Hulu and Peacock on September 23, 2021. View the entire trailer below:

DreamWorks’ series will consist of six total episodes and continue the “ever-evolving story” of the Croods and the Bettermans, the latter of which were first introduced in The Croods: A New Age. Sparring rivals turned unlikely friends, both families must overcome their differences to live together on the “most idyllic farm in prehistory.” Executive producers and showrunners for the show include Mark Banker and Todd Grimes. Given the cast list above, it does not appear that any of the original voice actors from the first two films are reprising their roles, which featured the voices of Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, and Ryan Reynolds.

While both films in the franchise have failed to win over critics, their box office earnings have shown a dedicated fan base. Though the sequel earned significantly less in revenue, mainly due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Croods: A New Age still managed to rake in over $1.85 million from just 2,211 theaters on its first day in the United States. However, lacking the star power of the original voice cast, it will be interesting to see if The Croods: Family Tree is as much of a hit with the franchise’s fan base.
