A trailer for The Croods sequel film The Croods: New Age dropped earlier today, giving the first look into this new addition to the popular children’s franchise. The first The Croods film debuted in 2013 to decidedly positive reviews, though it didn’t receive the same critical recognition as some of DreamWorks’ other series like How to Train Your Dragon.

The trailer, posted to the official Peacock Kids YouTube channel, summarizes the major events of the new animated film. The primitive Crood family, in search of a new home, encounters the Bettermans, a family of more advanced humans that have new technology, a giant farm, and a teenage daughter named Dawn, played by Kelly Marie Tran. Dawn instantly becomes friends with the Croods’ daughter Eep (voiced by Emma Stone), and the two set off on a dangerous adventure together against their parents’ wishes. This powerful friendship between the two girls seems to be the focus of the film, and it appears that the writers made an effort to depict Dawn and Eep as allies rather than pit them against each other. This positive representation of female friendship, if done correctly, could be incredibly valuable for young girls watching this movie. You can view the whole trailer below.

The trailer also confirms that The Croods: New Age will be premiering in theaters this Thanksgiving. However, given the current state of the coronavirus pandemic in the U.S., this may be subject to change. If this new movie does get a theatrical release as expected, it could be good news for struggling theaters with limited offerings. But whether The Croods: New Age will be a success remains to be seen.
