The show The Crown has proven to be one of Netflix’s most popular and successful original shows to date. Telling the story of the British Royal Family, the show has done an incredible job in making all of the characters very realistic, with the actors who have taken on the roles being heavily praised for their performances in their portrayals.

Sometimes, it is easy to get lost in the person they’re playing and forget there is a talented actor behind it all, but throughout its four seasons, the show has had some fantastic casting. But while they’ve become well known for their roles in The Crown, where else have you seen the Season 4 cast before?

10 Emerald Fennell – Call The Midwife

Emerald Fennell portrayed Camilla Parker Bowles in season four of the show, which is a huge role considering the main focus of the series is on Prince Charles and his relationships. Camilla is the mistress of the Prince, a relationship that drives some of the narratives of the season.

Emerald plays the role really well, but aside from this show, she is best known for her appearance in Call The Midwife, which is another popular series. She plays Nurse Patsy Mount, in the series that focuses on a group of nurse-midwives in London during the 1950s as they juggle both their jobs and personal lives.

9 Helena Bonham Carter – Harry Potter Franchise

Helena Bonham Carter is arguably the biggest name to appear in The Crown, and she plays Princess Margaret, who is certainly a complex character. Often in the shadows of her sister, she is someone who struggles to find love and inner peace.

Helena Bonham Carter plays the role perfectly, given that character acting is something she thrives on. Outside of The Crown, she is best known for her role in the Harry Potter franchise, playing Bellatrix Lestrange. As one of the most wicked and evil characters in the series. She also brings a huge amount of personality to that role too, making it a memorable one.

8 Josh O’Connor – Les Misérables

Josh O’Connor takes on one of the most important parts in The Crown, by playing Prince Charles, a character that is gaining more focus with every season. Season four was heavily centered around him and his relationships, and it’s a role he certainly portrayed very well.

Outside of the Netflix show, Josh O’Connor is best known for being part of the BBC’s televised version of Les Misérables. The popular musical, which features a revolution, a great love story, and a hunt between the police and a convict has been told in many different forms. This particular version was a little more dramatic. Josh played the role of Marius

7 Emma Corrin – Pennyworth

In The Crown, Emma Corrin was one of season four’s main characters, playing one of the most beloved people in British history, Princess Diana. There’s been a lot documented about her life, but this show portrayed the Princess in its own unique and dramatic manner. Emma took on her mannerisms well.

This role was her big break as an actress, but she did appear in four episodes of the television series, Pennyworth. She plays a nightclub dancer in the show who falls for the lead role, Alfred Pennyworth. The show explored the life of the man who, of course, goes on to be well-known as Bruce Wayne’s butler.

6 Erin Doherty – Call The Midwife

Erin Doherty got an increased role for the fourth season as Princess Anne. She’s someone with a stiff upper lip who has no problem giving her honest opinion, which does make her very blunt, but also quite a funny member of the Royal Family.

Much like Emma Corrin, Erin is only at the start of her career, with this being her big break as well. However, she did also star in Call The Midwife. She was one of the characters who gave birth on the show, meanwhile, her husband suffered major injuries following an explosion at the docks, which led to a very emotional storyline.

5 Marion Bailey – Meantime

Marion Bailey is The Queen Mother, Queen Elizabeth in The Crown, who is often someone that her daughters go to for advice on bigger subjects. While the character doesn’t have as much impact in season four as she does in the first two seasons, it’s still an important role in the show.

Away from Buckingham Palace, Marion Bailey has had an excellent career in the movies, television, and on stage. One of her biggest roles came in the movie, Meantime, which focuses on a working-class family and how they react to the recession in England. There is comedy and heartache, and some fantastic acting throughout the story.

4 Tom Brooke – Pirate Radio

Tom Brooke only appears in one episode of The Crown, but he takes on an important role, with the whole episode focused on his character. He plays Michael Fagan, a man who infamously snuck into Buckingham Palace and got into The Queen’s bedroom and had a conversation with her before his arrest.

His character was a very interesting part of the show, with his conversation with Queen Elizabeth II being one of the best in the series. One role people will likely know him best from is the movie, Pirate Radio, which is focused on a pirate radio station and the DJs onboard as the British government attempts to close them for good. Tom plays the character of Thick Kevin, who provides some of the big comedic moments.

3 Gillian Anderson – Sex Education

Politics play a huge part in the show, as the relationship between the Queen and the Prime Minister is a crucial element. It also allows for some non-Royal stories as well, and in season four it was Gillian Anderson who was in the hot seat as she played Magaret Thatcher.

As one of the most famous Prime Ministers of all time, it was a huge role and one she did very well. Although, her performance as ‘The Iron Lady’ is a far cry away from how she is in another Netflix success, Sex Education. In that show, she plays Jean Milburn who is a sex therapist and is totally open about everything, which is the opposite of Margaret Thatcher. Meanwhile, her less confident son, Otis, starts his own sex clinic at school, giving advice for money.

2 Tobias Menzies – Game Of Thrones

Tobias Menzies has been involved in two huge television shows throughout his career, being part of both The Crown and Game Of Thrones. Menzies replaced Matt Smith as Prince Philip for seasons three and four of The Crown, taking on the role to play a slightly older version of the character.

However, outside of this show, he’s best known for being part of Game Of Thrones, which couldn’t be any more different from being part of the Royal Family. In the series, he takes on the role of Edmure Tully, who is someone heavily involved in helping Robb Stark.

1 Olivia Colman – Broadchurch

Olivia Colman is the lead actor within The Crown, taking on the role of Queen Elizabeth II, which is obviously a very tough part to take on. Considering that Queen Elizabeth II is one of the most well-known people in the world, there was a huge responsibility on her shoulders, and it’s something that Olivia Colman certainly thrived in.

Aside from this show, Colman has had an incredible career in television, appearing in a wide variety of shows. One of the best was Broadchurch, which saw her win the British Academy Television Award For Best Actress, where she worked alongside David Tennant as a death in a small town causes huge shockwaves. The series follows how the police deal with the situation, which is where Colman’s character comes in.
