Deethra, better known as Deet, is one of the principal characters in the Netflix streaming series The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance. Though the series has been canceled after only one season, hope remains that the story will somehow continue. Deet’s journey ended on a major cliffhanger, and the more fans learn about her, the more they want to know.

Deet’s background is full of interesting facts and trivia that connect her to the larger mythos of The Dark Crystal, which began with the 1982 movie directed by Jim Henson and continues in graphic novels, fiction, and perhaps someday, live-action once again.

10 Voiced By Nathalie Emmanuel

Deet is realized in the series through the art of puppetry. Two different puppeteers brought her to life on screen: Beccy Henderson and Katherine Smee.

Her voice was supplied by British actress Nathalie Emmanuel, perhaps best known as Danerys’ advisor and friend Missandei from Game of Thrones. Emmanuel is also part of The Fast And The Furious franchise, which could potentially get as fantastic in its concepts as The Dark Crystal.

9 From The Grottan Clan

Deet hails from the Grottan Clan, one of the varied clans of the Gelfling species on the world of Thraa. The Grottan Clan dwells underground in the caves of Grot.

Centuries of cave-dwelling gave the Grottans incredible eyesight, and much larger eyes than their kin, though this makes them sensitive to sunlight. Deet, like her family and other Grottans, is also averse to washing her hands which comes about from working and farming in the earth all day.

8 Age Of Division

Deet is a young woman living in the Age of Resistance, a period set well before the dark era of the original 1982 movie. The powerful Skeksis in The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance are in control of Thraa, and desperate to maintain their control and their lives.

Their desperation turns to genocide in the course of the Netflix series, and Deet becomes a major member of the Resistance that arises. Sadly, fans know that by the time of the original movie, all the Gelfling, including Deet, have perished.

7 Glow Moss

Glow moss is a bioluminescent plant that grows in the caves of Grot as well as the Endless Forest. The Grottan Clan cultivates the moss to feed its Nurloc herds, large, peaceful worm-like creatures native to the caves of Grot. Deet works in the fields and takes a lot of joy in feeding the Nurloc worms.

Deet has a special and genuine connection to the world and other creatures, which eventually positions her for a deep connection to Thraa and her people, but also leaves her vulnerable to the spreading infection of The Darkening.

6 Appears To Be Based On Thurma

The Dark Crystal was one of the best 80s fantasy films, but it wasn’t a huge box office success. Sequels came together and then fell apart, and the story continued in projects that never got off the ground. One of them was Power Of The Dark Crystal, which had an influence on Deet.

She appears to be based in part on the character of Thurma. Thurma was a female Fireling who lived during the Age of Power. Power of the Dark Crystal was a planned sequel to The Dark Crystal, which was set for release in the late 2000s and later adapted into a comic book series.

5 A Rare Flyer

Deet is unique in lots of ways. One of them is that she has wings. In the original film, it was revealed that only female Gelfling have wings. Deet is really the first Gelfling seen in the saga to make use of her wings in exciting ways (she dropped bombs on the Skeksis in the Second Battle of The Stone Wood).

Deet also uses her wings to ferry her and Rian across Thraa and to the Circle of The Suns and to a major realization about the ultimate ambition of the Skeksis.

4 Deet And Rian

Deet and Rian are one of the best duos in Age Of Resistance and their nascent relationship could have major implications for the story of the original movie. The two Gelflings make a connection in the series, but they struggle to maintain it with Deet’s continued absorption of The Darkening.

There are suggestions about their potential future in the series and there are theories that the pair could be the parents of Jen, the male Gelfling hero of the 1982 movie.

3 Gentle But Firm

Deet’s gentle and curious nature is an endearing quality that causes some characters in the Age Of Resistance to underestimate her. As she proves against the Skeksis and even some of her fellow Gelfling, Deet can get her hands dirty in a lot of different ways.

She intervenes with the Stonewood Clan to try and stop them from harassing her Podling friend Hup and in the Second Battle Of The Stone In The Wood, she absorbs a powerful wave of Darkening energy and directs some of it back at one of the Skeksis, skekLach.

2 Domrak

Deet originates from the caves of Grot, but her home village is Domrak. Domrak is a cavernous hall deep within the cave systems of Grot, located by a massive lake deep underground.

The village originated as an Arathim nest but was later settled by the Grottan Clan after the Arathim had been pushed away by the Skeksis. Deet leaves her home at the outset of the series but returns later to find it has been overrun by the Arathim again, who have been infected by The Darkening.

1 Flames Of The Dark Crystal

Deet’s future on television is uncertain, which is a shame given there are a lot of unresolved plotlines from The Dark Crystal: Age Of Resistance.

But Deet has appeared in other media, like the 2019 YA novel Flames Of The Dark Crystal by writer J.M Lee and illustrator Cory Godbey. This story serves as a prequel to the television series, and the book intersects with Deet and Rian on their mission to find the Dual Glaive. Perhaps Deet’s story will continue in further novels in the future.
