Warning! Spoilers for Justice League Incarnate #3 by DC Comics

The Great Darkness has finally arrived in the pages of DC Comics, and it’s similar to Marvel’s living embodiment of evil, the One Below All. In Justice League Incarnate #4, the comic ends with the Great Darkness making itself known in the series as the Multiverse’s greatest heroes might be forced to team up with Darkseid to stop the true source of evil across the cosmos.

The Great Darkness first appeared in Swamp Thing #49 (1986) and was created by Alan Moore and Stan Wooch. The primordial god-like being represented all evil across the Multiverse and was initially summoned to destroy all of creation. The Great Darkness even caused a civil war in Hell before reaching into the heavens and disappearing. After being unseen for some time, Darkseid has made it his most important quest to harness the power of the Great Darkness to rule the Omniverse – with a new war for its power between some of DC’s biggest villains teased. Now, the Great Darkness has arrived, and it’s bringing nothing good to the universe.

The Great Darkness is similar to Marvel’s One Below All, which just played a key role in the conclusion of Immortal Hulk by Al Ewing and Joe Bennett. In that story, it turns out the One Below All is just the opposite side of the One-Above-All and represents destruction and hate across the Multiverse. While the original Great Darkness appeared decades before the One Below All, it seems like DC Comics is having a similar threat emerge in their universe. Although, the Great Darkness’ true powers are still fully known at this point.

With DC Comics teasing the Great Darkness being an even greater threat than Darkseid – so much so that the heroes may need to team up with the supervillain – it seems things are about to get much darker from this point on. Like the One Below All, the Great Darkness likely will live up to its name, spelling bad news for the Justice League Incarnate and the Multiverse.
