The Star Wars Galaxy is so incredibly vast and expansive, with so much of it to this day still unexplored, likely holding within it a series of brilliant stories desperate to get told. From what fans have gotten to see, though, there is a wide variety of stories, as well as characters who are usually loyal to a cause or are a part of a distinctive group/faction of people.

These groups have become famous in themselves, with fans continually speculating the allegiances of new characters who get announced for any new content, as they are so distinctive they fit well with the famous moral alignments from Dungeons & Dragons.

10 The Galactic Empire

The Galactic Empire is pretty much the epitome of ‘Lawful Evil,’ and maybe the most obvious pairing of every group or faction of people in the Star Wars Galaxy.

Ruled by a character who is evil to his very core, the Empire uses fear and force to make the Galaxy obey their strict laws as they increase their power. They are evil, striving for order, and tyranny over the universe.

9 The Rebel Alliance

The Rebel Alliance, the enemies who oppose the Empire in between the time of the prequel trilogy and original trilogy, are so clearly the opposite of the ‘Lawful Evil’ Empire, ‘Chaotic Good.’

They are fighting against what has become the new norm of society, the rules and order forced upon the Galaxy by the Empire. They fight back, they are the voice of the voiceless, striving to save the Galaxy.

8 Smugglers

Smugglers are one of the most popular groups in Star Wars, present from the very start in the form of Han Solo and Chewbacca, with more popping up as time has gone on.

Smugglers are another natural fit as they align with the ‘Chaotic Neutral’ moral alignment. They do not discriminate in who they do business with and are free spirits; they do not necessarily want to fight against the structure of society, but also do not want to get told what to do by anybody, and can tend to slip between ‘Chaotic Good’ and ‘Chaotic Evil.’

7 The First Order

There are no significant differences between the First Order and the Galactic Empire, save for their levels of success, their names, and the slight change in Stormtrooper helmet, meaning the First Order are also ‘Lawful Evil.’

They were out to destroy the regime of the New Republic, successfully doing so to rise to power themselves as the Galaxy’s new tyrannical state.

6 The Resistance

In that same vein, the Resistance is the sequel trilogy’s answer to the Rebel Alliance, having so many survivors from that era amongst their ranks, including Leia, Nein Numb, Ackbar, and more.

‘Chaotic Good’ pairs with the Resistance as they, like the rebels, fight for the Galaxy, for peace, prosperity, and justice. While the New Republic was a ‘Lawful Neutral,’ even ‘Lawful Good,’ the movement that is born from it, is ‘Chaotic.’

5 Bounty Hunters

Like smugglers, bounty hunters have been a part of Star Wars since its inception, first seen in the form of the Rodian who shot second, Greedo. Since then, a slew of phenomenal characters have taken up the career.

They are a hard group to place, on the one hand, they are free spirits, but on the other hand, tend to – for the most part – side with what the money does, caring not for anything else but their own agenda, their own creed, and what gets them paid, looking for the best deal for themselves and what they care about, making them a ‘True Neutral.’

4 The Confederacy Of Independent Systems

The Confederacy of Independent Systems, better known as the Separatist Alliance is a very tricky organization to place, as there are two sides to them; the falsehood Dooku presents to regular citizens making them an alternative to the corrupt Republic, and the real version with an evil agenda, puppeteered by Dooku and Sidious.

They are a strange mix of ‘Chaotic Evil’ and ‘Lawful Evil’ in their true form. They are orchestrating a false war, with each high up Separatist caring for their own needs, caring not for anyone else, in a chaotic yet meticulously crafted manner, while also being a part of a grander scheme under Sidious, a lawful one under his control

3 The Galactic Republic

Their opposite is a lot easier to place, but the Galactic Republic is not necessarily the easiest to place given the corruption that runs through its core.

Ideally, the Republic would be ‘Lawful Good,’ doing right by society in every way it can, and, sometimes, it can be, but sometimes is the keyword. The Republic is a democracy; some Senators are evil, some good, some neutral, and as such, the Galactic Republic is a ‘Lawful Neutral,’ taking an overall logical approach to decision making.

2 The Sith Order

The Sith Order is a strange beast when it comes to the D&D Moral Alignments, changing between all three versions of evil depending on the era of Sith.

For the most part, they are ‘Neutral Evil,’ driven by their wants and desires, making alliances if it suits them and cutting them off when they are no longer beneficial, always looking to gain more power and to further their own cause. In the early years of the Sith, they change between that and ‘Chaotic Evil’ depending on the true evil nature of the individual Sith. Then there is Sidious who employed ‘Lawful Evil’ in the Galaxy through the Empire alongside Vader and then Dooku and Plagueis before him. Overall though, looking at Galactic history, ‘Neutral Evil’ fits the Sith Order more consistently.

1 The Jedi Order

The Jedi Order, the Light to the Sith Dark, the good to the Sith evil, is far easier to place than their red blade-wielding opposites, but like the Sith, are also split.

By the time of the prequels, in the era of Jedi fans truly get to know, the Jedi Order seems to have fallen into a state of ‘Lawful Neutral,’ stringently following their code, no matter who they may hurt with their actions, they do things according to their code, and even if they have good intentions, their dedication to the Jedi Code often gets in the way of doing true good.

From what we know of the Jedi of the High Republic and before that, long before the war corrupted the Galaxy, the Jedi appear to have been ‘Lawfully Good,’ going off their code, but fighting for good, for peace, and justice.
