Star-Lord has recently died in the Marvel Universe. Giving his life to save the galaxy from a pantheon of evil gods, the loss of Peter Quill tore the Guardians of the Galaxy in two. However, if that’s the case, why is he gracing the cover of Guardians of the Galaxy #9 in Marvel Comics’ December solicitations – alive if not well?

In the first couple issues of the most current Guardians series, Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon decided to join Nova and his allies to take down the Gods of Olympus, who are seeking to make war across the cosmos. Quill and Rocket determined to do this in secret as Gamora and the others would have preferred for them all to stay in retirement. While they managed to save Hercules, Star-Lord ended up giving his life to save his allies, fighting off several of the gods and blowing up Olympus with himself still on it. Naturally, once Gamora found out, things were not good. Blaming Rocket for Peter’s death, she forced him out of their team and family, splitting the Guardians into two.

However, it looks as though Peter Quill somehow survived the explosion in the solicitation for Guardians of the Galaxy #9. Written by Al Ewing with art by Juan Cabal, the mystery of the how and why will be revealed in the upcoming December issue. Here’s the cover art by Rafael Albquerque and the synopsis from the Marvel Comics solicitations:

Everyone thought he was dead. They were wrong. Now Peter Quill journeys through a mythic world on the other side of our reality. But is he still Peter Quill… or is he the legendary Star-Lord? Get ready for a GUARDIANS tale unlike any you’ve ever seen before – as the clock starts ticking for the last stand.

While the solicitation and cover art does confirm that Star-Lord lives, the circumstances are still unknown. However, if the floating skeletons in space are any indication, those circumstances don’t seem like they’ll be good ones. Apparently, he’ll also be stuck on the other side of reality, so he’s potentially trapped in another dimension. Not only that, but the synopsis seems to indicate some sort of personality crisis ahead, as the titles of Peter Quill and Star-Lord may no longer be as synonymous with each other as they have been in the past.

It’s good to know that Star-Lord will be back soon, in whatever form that may take. However, it’s not unexpected. Death in the Marvel Universe has always essentially been a revolving door with countless more resurrections and revivals from the afterlife than there are any permanent deaths. Each character is valuable IP after all. Regardless, Star-Lord is a great character, and hopefully his resurrection will be able to bring the Guardians of the Galaxy back together again once more.
