Warning! Spoilers ahead for War for Earth-3 #1

In the first issue of DC Comics’ new crossover War for Earth-3, the evil version of Green Lantern just improved one of Hal Jordan’s classic moves with his power ring. While Green Lanterns can create constructs of whatever they can imagine using their willpower, every Lantern has their favorites and go-to moves. This includes one of the Green Lantern Corps’ best, though the dark Emerald Knight certainly puts his own ridiculous (yet effective) spin on Hal Jordan’s favorite ring attack in this new issue.

Coming from Robbie Thompson, Dennis Hopeless, Steve Pugh, Dexter Soy, and Brent Peeples, War for Earth-3 is the culmination of Director Amanda Waller’s plans that were teased during DC’s title-wide Future State event. Involving two Suicide Squads, the Teen Titans, and Earth-3’s dark version of the Justice League known as the Crime Syndicate, it’s a massive brawl for the ages to determine the fate of this alternate world in the DC Multiverse. As such, War for Earth-3 #1 sees the evil counterpart to John Stewart known as the Emerald Knight fighting as the first line of defense against Waller’s agents.

Extremely confident in his power and his team’s rule over the world, the Emerald Knight is barely concerned by Waller and the forces she’s brought to bear on Earth-3, having traveled from Earth-0 in a bid to achieve peace (by any means necessary). As a result, this dark version of Stewart is having a blast maiming and killing Waller’s team. He even riffs on Hal Jordan’s classic construct of a giant fist, giving his own version monster truck wheels as it tears through the battlefield.

While the Emerald Knight’s ring can talk to him, the only thing it has to share is its embarrassment by Stewart’s constructs. However, his “Monster Punch” is brutally effective as it runs over and completely flattens the Emerald Knight’s foes. While the Green Lantern Corps generally seeks more nonlethal means of keeping the galaxy safe, that’s clearly not the case for the Emeralds Knights and their Overlords of Oa, as they’re known on Earth-3. As such, a giant fist/monster truck hybrid is probably on the tamer side of what this evil John Stewart is capable of.

While the Emerald Knight certainly thinks at first that Waller’s invasion is all fun and games, those feelings end after he encounters the Black Hand who forces him into submission. Now, the issue’s end sees Emerald Knight working with Waller to end Rick Flag’s Suicide Squad who’s looking to arrest the Task Force X director and bring her back home to Earth-0. Regardless, seeing the evil Green Lantern flex on Hal Jordan with a brutally improved fist construct is certainly entertaining in this new issue from DC Comics.
