Before Steven Strait became well known on the small screen for his role in The Expanse, he first gained recognition as a witch and a teen hero on the big screen. The 2015 sci-fi drama series was a hit amongst fans and Strait might have played a role in its success as the character James Holden, the Earther executive officer on the Canterbury

The show became his biggest success to date but before then dazzled fans in a popular supernatural teen movie and as a main cast member in an American drama series. His filmography list may not be extensive but is certainly memorable for some. Especially his role in a certain epic action-adventure movie from 2008.

10 Undiscovered (2005): 4.3

Undiscovered was one of Strait’s lesser-known roles from 2005. For fans of the actor, it’s one of his hidden gems. It told a common story of entertainers trying to make it in L.A. Strait played the lead role as Luke Falcon alongside his love interest Brie Tucket played by Pell James. Brie moves to L.A. to pursue her modeling career and meets Luke and realizes his potential as a musician.

Luke gets his big break but it costs him the people he cares for most and the woman he loves. The movie became popular for a rock performance scene montage that fans swooned over. An aspect of the movie fans enjoyed was that Luke’s original songs were sung by Strait himself.

9 10,000 BC (2008): 5.1

Strait gained some recognition in his role as D’Leh, a mammoth hunter in 10,000 BC. The movie did moderately well at the box office but received some criticism for its archaeological and historical inaccuracy. Fans still noted Strait’s performance. The storyline originally starts with a female survivor of another tribe describing a prophecy about demons, mammoths, and who will become chief of the tribe.

Along the way, D’Leh falls in love with her. But she and his tribespeople are kidnapped by raiders. In the adventure story, D’Leh goes on a dangerous journey to save their people.

8 The Covenant (2006): 5.3

The Covenant became one of Strait’s most recognized roles early on in his career. The movie is a guilty pleasure for fans of the supernatural teen genre. It gained popularity when vampires, werewolves, and witches were a huge sell in pop culture. It revolved around a group of childhood friends known as the Sons of Ipswitch.

The movie had backstory undertones relating to the Salem witch trials. This group of friends are actually witches with powers that get stronger when they turn 18. Caleb (Strait) is the leader and discovers there’s another bloodline wreaking havoc to rob him of his addictive powers.

7 Life Like (2019): 5.4

Strait took part in a sci-fi/thriller movie called Life Like. The movie created quite a stir on social media with fans of the actor as it didn’t shy away from mature themes and nudity. The movie follows a familiar story about A.I.s often seen in this genre.

An upscale couple moves to the suburbs and the wife is uncomfortable having house employees. Instead, they meet an A.I. seller and purchase an android named Henry (Strait). Henry is diligent in his work but starts to develop emotions and begins to dream, which leads to sexual encounters with the couple. There’s a grand twist to the plot about Henry’s origins as well.

6 Here Awhile (2020): 5.4

The 2020 movie has some familiar faces. The lead female character is played by a former Bella from Pitch Perfect. In this movie, Anna (Anna Camp) finds out she’s terminally ill and decides to reconnect with her estranged brother, Michael (Strait) to bury their hatchet.

The story will have some viewers in tears at its emotion as Anna makes the decision to self euthanize instead of dealing with the pain of her illness. The movie did relatively well but will resonate with viewers as a young woman tries to make amends with her brother and what she has left of life.

5 After (2012): 5.5

After might be an interesting movie to watch one night for fans of Strait or fantasy thrillers. But viewers might find some issues in the plot’s delivery and lack of charisma. A comic book artist (Strait) and a nurse meet by chance on the bus before getting into a crash.

They wake up in a bizarre circumstance with a dark fog surrounding the town. They also discover that they are reverted to 1992 in a dream-like state but then shift back to 2012. They hypothesize that the fog will soon engulf the town and need to figure out what really happened. Did they die or is something else at play?

4 Sky High (2005): 6.2

Everyone who grew up on Disney Channel or related networks would recall Sky High. It’s a fun, comical, and superhero-driven story of freshman heroes and sidekicks saving the day. It was Strait’s first acting role in a movie. Fans soon had their first crush when introduced to Warren Peace (Strait). The son of a villain who is pyrokinetic.

In the movie, Strait is at first seen as a foe but comes to help Will (Michael Angarano) and his sidekick friends defeat his parent’s old arch-nemesis. Warren had the bad boy vibe that young audiences dreamed about along with his striking good looks, the misunderstood character, and a hidden sweet demeanor.

3 City Island (2009): 7.4

In this movie, Strait plays a 24-year-old prison inmate. City Island tells the story of a dysfunctional family in the Bronx. A prison guard discovers his illegitimate son is now an inmate at the same prison where he works. He gets him out and hires him as help at his home, though the family is unaware Tony (Strait) is really their family.

It turns the whole family upside down though. The daughter is suspended from college and becomes a stripper to earn money for the next semester, while the patriarch ventures into a new journey in acting.

2 Magic City (2012-2013): 7.6

The second highest-rated work in Strait’s filmography is the drama series, Magic City. The show is a period drama taking place in 1959 Miami, Florida. This means seeing Strait all done up with sleeked-back hair of the time period. The story takes place shortly after the Cuban Revolution centered around the owner of a glamourous hotel.

To get his hotel to become elite, he makes a deal with the Jewish Mob. Strait coincidently plays a character named Steven or “Stevie,” the “bad boy” son of the hotel’s owner and its manager. Many fans commended the show’s acting in a glamorous and upscale setting.

1 The Expanse (2015): 8.5

Straits’ most coveted and well-loved role came from the science fiction drama, The Expanse. The show went through its hurdles originally being canceled on SyFy after three seasons before being picked up by Amazon Prime. Based on a novel series, the show’s synopsis details the story of a band of protagonists, the United Nations Security Council member, a detective, and the ship’s officer played by Strait.

Set in the future where humans have colonized the Solar System, there’s a brewing tension between Earth and Mars that could lead to war. In between it all are the protagonists who set out to investigate the case of a missing young woman. The investigation might lead to the biggest conspiracy of them all.
