The first season of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier had fans jumping due to excitement and, as episodes drop every week, the thrill continues to overwhelm them because of its cliffhanger endings and jaw-dropping action sequences. It is no wonder why the series was so well-received; the cast was outstanding, the storyline was gripping, and just the entire idea of it lives up to what Captain America is all about.

Bucky Barnes has always been a character on the sideline but this time, it’s his turn to shine. As half of the duo in the series, Bucky had some of his defining moments, which absolutely shaped his character and brought a different take on his new persona – now that he is no longer the ruthless Winter Soldier that fans knew before. Here’s a list of Bucky Barnes’s most unforgettable lines from the show:

9 “So Who Are You Fighting Now… Gandalf?”

This is the first pop culture reference that Bucky mentioned in the series. He and Sam were talking about fighting aliens, monsters, and wizards when Bucky sarcastically pulled this line. He also claimed he read The Hobbit in 1937 when it first came out.

It was good to know that Bucky is slowly familiarizing himself with the trends and modern culture. He is 106 years old and there were so many things he missed and needs to catch up on while being the Winter Soldier. He was also locked up willingly in Wakanda, and in between those times, a lot has happened in the outside world.

8 “Just ‘Cause You Carry That Shield, It Doesn’t Mean You’re Captain America.”

That was a blow on John Walker’s ego. Being Steve Roger’s main man for the longest time, Bucky was still having a hard time accepting that his old friend is no longer the man he always knew. He feels weirded out that some blonde guy he barely knows is wearing the iconic costume and donning the shield.

Although John Walker claims that he is just doing his job and he was trained the same way Captain America did, like jumping on top of a grenade, it seems that no one can replace the legacy and the memory that Steve left on Bucky.

7 “Why Did You Give Up That Shield?”

In a counseling session with Dr. Raynor, Sam and Bucky talked about the cause of their misunderstanding and it turns out that Bucky was mad that Sam turned over Captain America’s shield to the government. He believes it is the closest thing to a family, and now that someone else owns it, he feels like he lost everything.

Bucky remains in denial about everything that happened and all that he holds dear are his fondest memories with Steve, and all the battles they fought together.

6 “So Maybe He Was Wrong About You, And If He Was Wrong About You Then He Was Wrong About Me!”

The audience can feel Bucky’s emotions as he feels that perhaps Steve made the wrong choice of trusting both of them. In this line, he is now contemplating that if Steve made a mistake of entrusting the shield to Sam, then that meant there was no way that Bucky was worthy of redemption.

Steve has always believed in Bucky even when he turned on him when he became the Winter Soldier. He always knew there’s a part of him that remains good, and that was the only thing Bucky clings on to remember who he was before he became a super-soldier.

5 “Looking Strong, John!”

In this episode, the Dora Milaje finally made their appearance in an unforgettable fight scene. John Walker has never met them and clearly has no idea who he is dealing with. So, when John angered Ayo, everything spiraled into chaos. Bucky sarcastically cheered for John as he gets his rear beaten up by Wakanda’s greatest warriors.

Sam, on the other hand, tells Bucky that they should do something or else John would end up severely injured. Seeing the guy who supposedly ‘stole’ the name and fame of Captain America get squashed by the Dora Milaje must be a satisfying moment for Bucky.

4 “All The Time. It Means I Remember. It Means A Part Of Me Is Still There, Which Means A Part Of The Winter Soldier’s Still In Me.”

While they were having a shield throwing practice, Sam asked Bucky if he is still having nightmares, to which the latter admitted he still endures them. Years of therapy and counseling sessions have not completely relieved Bucky of his past memories. He remembers all the names and the faces. He remembers the way he did it and not having any choice is what haunts him.

In the scene where Ayo starts to recite the forbidden words, Bucky was no longer affected or triggered by them. It was a very emotional scene, especially when Ayo proudly said to him, “You are free.” Despite that, the remnants of the Winter Soldier still lurk in Bucky’s memories.

3 “You Don’t Think I Ever Fought For Something Bigger Than Myself? That’s All I Ever Tried To Do And I Failed Twice.”

Bucky was trying to stop Karli Morgenthau from fulfilling her plans because he knows that it will never end well. The young girl said that it is not about her and she does not care what happens to her because she’s fighting for something bigger than herself. Bucky retorted that he fought twice in the past, and similarly, failed twice.

He was talking about the time he fought Hydra alongside Captain America and fell from the train, which saw him lose his left arm. He could also be talking about the time he and the 107th infantry were captured and experimented on with the super-soldier serum by Dr. Arnim Zola.

2 “It’s A Great App!”

To lure the rest of Karli’s gang, Bucky sent an encrypted message through a device that deceived the Flag Smashers to come out of their hiding place, only to be surrounded by the police. They were all arrested and scheduled for transport, which clearly did not end well.

Bucky using technology is something that has always bring joy to the fans. Whenever he appears to learn something from the modern world, it shows how much he is trying to live the rest of his life as himself and not as the Winter Soldier.

1 “He Was Murdered By The Winter Soldier And That Was Me.”

In a very heart-wrenching scene in the season finale, a repentant Bucky knocks on Yori Nakajima’s door to tell him the truth about his son’s death. He told him that RJ Nakajima was murdered and that he was the one responsible for it.

Yori must feel both relieved and disappointed because finally, this shed some light on his son’s death but also lost a friend who he almost treats like a son. Bucky must also feel the same way, and even though things won’t be the same again for both of them, at least the truth has set everyone free.
