Warner Bros.’ The Flash movie is finally happening, giving Ezra Miller’s Barry Allen a highly-anticipated solo film in the DC Extended Universe. The studio announced plans for The Flash back in 2014 after Miller was cast as the Scarlet Speedster for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Production continued on the movie as he made additional appearances in Suicide Squad and Justice League, although DCEU’s unclear future post-Zack Snyder has thrown everything into question. After many starts and stops, Ezra Miller’s The Flash movie is on the way.

One of the biggest hurdles The Flash had to overcome was finding the right director. Phil Lord and Chris Miller originally wrote a script for the movie with eyes on directing, but they left to do Solo: A Star Wars Story. This was the beginning of a rotating door of directors, as Seth Grahame-Smith joined but then left due to creative differences. Rick Famuyiwa became attached in 2016 and planned a role for Cyborg (Ray Fisher), but he left by the end of the year too. John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein took on the job next after several other directors passed, but their exit paved the way for IT‘s Andy Muschietti to take on the movie instead. He started filming The Flash movie based on Christina Hodson’s script in April 2021 and wrapped production in October.

The Flash Movie Release Date

Warner Bros. currently has The Flash‘s release date set for June 23, 2023, which is much later than expected. The studio originally announced in 2014 that the movie would hit theaters in March 2018, but it eventually lost that release date due to its prolonged development. Once Andy Muschietti was hired to direct, The Flash received a July 2022 release date, but it was ultimately delayed to November 2022 due to COVID-19. However, WB then decided to delay the movie once more to give the creative team and visual effects teams more time to complete the movie. Once The Flash releases in June 2023, it will head to HBO Max just 45 days later.

The Flash Movie Cast & DCEU Characters

Ezra Miller leads the movie as two versions of Barry Allen, but The Flash‘s cast includes many other returning DCEU (or DC) characters. Kiersey Clemons reprises her role as Iris West from Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and the film introduces Sasha Calle as Supergirl. The Flash also includes two versions of Batman, as Ben Affleck returns as the DCEU’s Dark Knight and Michael Keaton reprises his role from Tim Burton’s Batman franchise. The movie is also confirmed to bring back Man of Steel‘s General Zod (Michael Shannon) and Faora-Ul (Antje Traue). There are even rumors of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman appearing in The Flash. The film’s cast also sees Maribel Verdú play Barry Allen’s mom and Ron Livingston replace Billy Crudup as Henry Allen.

The Flash’s Multiverse Story

Plot details for The Flash movie are still mostly a secret, but it is known that the film has a multiverse story. It is confirmed to be a reinvention of the classic Flashpoint storyline from the comics, which sees Barry Allen travel back in time to prevent his mother’s murder at Reverse-Flash’s hand. His actions result in a very different universe, though. The Flash‘s multiverse story will be used to explain Michael Keaton’s return and Miller’s two Barry Allens. This has led to speculation that the movie will reset the DCEU timeline in some fashion, giving Warner Bros. a cleaner slate moving forward.

Warner Bros. has already started promoting The Flash too, as the teaser trailer debuted during DC FanDome 2021. It provides a glimpse at the film’s multiverse story but still keeps plenty of elements a mystery. After numerous delays, fans will hopefully only have to wait a little bit more to finally see how The Flash shapes the future of the DCEU.
