How Robbie Amell’s Firestorm can return to The Flash season 8 despite being dead. Ronnie Raymond — Caitlin Snow’s husband and one-half of the superhero duo once known as Firestorm — died at the end of The Flash season 1, but Amell is set to reprise the role once more in season 8. With the “Armageddon” five-episode special event pulling out game-changing story arcs, there are a plethora of ways for Firestorm to reappear.

Ronnie sacrificed his life to save Central City from the Singularity that cropped up after Eddie Thawne died by suicide to prevent his descendant Eobard Thawne (aka, Reverse-Flash) from existing in the future. However, Ronnie’s death didn’t mean Amell was gone forever from the Arrowverse series. The actor returned in The Flash season 2, playing the evil Earth-2 doppelgänger of Firestorm. He resurfaced again in The Flash season 3 episode “Into the Speed Force,” which saw the Speed Force taking on his image to speak to Barry. Amell will return for a two-episode arc beginning in season 8’s episode 11.

While plot details surrounding his comeback are under wraps, it’s possible The Flash’s “Armageddon” event — which features a few major changes in the timeline and an alternate reality where Eobard Thawne is engaged to Iris West-Allen — could bring Firestorm back to life somehow. After all, the timeline might not be the same after everything and certain changes could become permanent after all is said and done. It could also be the version of Ronnie who returns in The Flash season 8 is actually a doppelgänger from another Earth who landed on Earth-Prime following the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover. That would certainly require a longer explanation considering the effects of “Crisis on Infinite Earths” are no longer revelatory and Cisco Ramon already documented all the changes from the past and present timelines before leaving Central City behind.

Still, this and changes made due to “Armageddon” are the most likely scenarios for Ronnie’s postmortem appearance. Conversely, Ronnie could also be a citizen of Stargirl’s Earth who pops in for some plot-related reason (like another mini crossover perhaps). Considering it’s The Flash, there are a number of ways Firestorm could come back to the show without bending over backwards to explain his sudden presence. His two-episode arc could be set in the past; perhaps Caitlin is struggling somehow in the present and the Arrowverse series revisits certain memories of her time with Ronnie before the particle accelerator explosion. It would make sense for Ronnie to appear in flashbacks or even in a dream sequence, making it easier to justify why he’s back on The Flash despite being dead for several years.

All told, it’s not a coincidence that Ronnie’s return to The Flash is in a season when Caitlin has finally decided to move on from her husband and open herself up to new romantic relationships. Whatever the reason for Amell’s return to The Flash, it seems most likely his character’s story will be tied to Caitlin’s arc somehow. Whether Firestorm will turn out to be a doppelgänger from another Earth or a memory, his two-episode arc in The Flash season 8 will be an interesting one for all involved.
