Warning: SPOILERS for this week’s episode of The Flash.

The Flashjust killed off a huge Justice League character: Gypsy (Jessica Camacho). Now in its sixth season, The Flash is building towards this year’s Arrowverse crossover, Crisis On Infinite Earths, where the cosmic being known as The Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) has decreed that the Flash (Grant Gustin) must die in order to save billions of lives. However, the death and destruction have already begun: Earth-2 was wiped out by an anti-matter wave on Arrow, which may have killed off that world’s Harrison Wells (Tom Cavanagh) and his speedster daughter Jesse Quick (Violett Beane). While not Crisis-related, Gypsy’s death further culls the Arrowverse of another superhero.

Gypsy first appeared in The Flash season 3 and popped up regularly into The Flash season 4. A Collector from Earth-19 who has never lost a fight, Gypsy was a metahuman with Multiverse dimensional powers similar to Cisco Ramon (Carlos Valdes) before he took the metahuman cure and stopped being Vibe. At first, Gypsy came to Earth-1 to capture H.R. Wells (Tom Cavanagh), which then resulted in Gypsy wanting to fight Vibe. Instead, romance sparked between the two heroes and Gypsy became Vibe’s girlfriend. A true badass, Gypsy helped Team Flash fight off the gorillas from Gorilla City on Earth-2 and she also fought the villain Abra Kadabra (David Dastmalchian). It took a long time for Gypsy to reveal her real name – Cynthia – to Cisco and later, Gypsy’s father Breacher (Danny Trejo) tried to kill Vibe for dating his daughter. However, both Gypsy and Breacher came to love Cisco. And yet, the romance between Gypsy and Vibe cooled off over time and Cisco began dating Kamilla Hwang (Victoria Park).

This week’s episode of The Flash, “Kiss Kiss Breach Breach”, was a Cisco-centric tale where Breacher returned to Earth-1 to tell Cisco that Gypsy was dead. Worse, the Collectors believed that Cisco himself killed Cynthia and wanted him apprehended for murder. Eventually, Cisco discovered that Echo, his evil doppelganger from Earth-19, was the one who killed Gypsy by disintegration and framed Earth-1’s Ramon. Echo fell for a trap laid by Cisco and the evil version of Vibe was captured by the Collectors. But Cisco received a little solace that when she knew she was dying, Gypsy made sure to jump to Earth-1 with the belief that Cisco would avenge her – and she was right. Later, Cisco and Kamilla were invited to attend Cynthia’s remembrance ceremony on Earth-19 by Breacher.

Gypsy was part of a wave of superheroes from DC Comics’ maligned early-1980s Justice League Detroit comics introduced into the Arrowverse, along with Steel (Nick Zano), who is a key member of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. (Vibe himself was also part of Justice League Detroit.) The comic book version of Gypsy was a teen runaway with invisibility powers named Cynthia Reynolds who fought crime barefoot in a gypsy costume. The Martian Manhunter became a friend and protector of Gypsy and she later popped up in a few different DC Comics incarnations over the years. The Flash‘s version of Gypsy was a huge improvement, making the character a formidable, dimension-hopping Collector and a tough, no-nonsense warrior. Basically, The Flash made Gypsy cool.

However, outside of being mentioned several times after her breakup with Cisco, Gypsy hasn’t appeared on The Flash since season 4 so her being killed off from the show isn’t too surprising. Gypsy’s death continues The Flash‘s unfortunate track record of ill-fated Multiversal romances after the relationship between Wally West (Keiynan Lonsdale) and Jesse Quick went belly-up. But since Crisis On Infinite Earths is poised to potentially remake the Arrowverse the way the comics series did the DC Universe, it’s still possible fans haven’t seen the last of Gypsy on The Flash. Fortunately, Jessica Camacho hasn’t entirely left the realm of DC Comics superheroes as she has a recurring role on HBO’s Watchmen as Pirate Jenny.
