WARNING: Spoilers from The Flash season 7, episode 18, “Heart of the Matter, Part 2.”

After how things went with their wedding in the Crisis on Earth-X crossover, The Flash season 7 finale ended with Barry Allen and Iris West-Allen finally renewing their vows. Ever since The Flash premiered in 2014, Iris and Barry’s love story have been central to the Arrowverse series. While Barry and Iris got engaged in The Flash season 3, it wasn’t until the fourth season when the two of them finally got married. However, like most superhero weddings in comics, things didn’t go exactly according to plan for Iris and Barry’s special event in The Flash season 4.

While Iris and Barry’s wedding was the reason all of the heroes came together in Crisis on Earth-X, the 2017 crossover took a dark turn once Nazis from another world invaded Earth-1. As they were amid their wedding ceremony, The Flash had to wait on tying the knot with Iris after Overgirl, Dark Arrow, and their Earth-X army showed up. After defeating them, Iris and Barry tried to get married in the Legends of Tomorrow portion of the crossover. However, what they were not prepared for was Arrow’s Felicity Smoak and Oliver Queen deciding to turn it into a double wedding.

Since the final scene of the 2017 crossover, Felicity and Oliver’s impromptu decision to get married has always looked bad as they stole Iris and Barry’s thunder. Even though the Nazi story made Oliver and Felicity grow closer again, it’s still not a great look that they made their friends’ wedding about themselves. But The Flash season 7 finale fixed that. After they finally defeated Godspeed, Barry asked Iris to renew their vows together, which led to the finale ending on a happy note. Not only was it beautiful for Iris and Barry to get to do that with their present and future family members, but it was a moment The Flash had earned after Crisis on Earth-X.

What made the original double wedding even worse was what happened in the following episode of Arrow season 6, where Felicity and Oliver had their own wedding ceremony without any interruptions. It made the story at the end of Crisis on Earth-X incredibly unnecessary because they could have easily waited for a week. In the following episode of The Flash season 4, Iris and Barry weren’t entirely thrilled about how two of their closest friends decided to get married during their wedding. It was never fair to Barry and Iris, but after a few years, they were finally able to have their own proper wedding, just as Oliver and Felicity did after the crossover.

Thanks to The Flash season 7 finale, Iris and Barry’s vow renewal ceremony was more compelling in the long run, mainly because it got to happen on their own show. It was also genuinely sweet to have Bart singing to his parents as a small callback to when Supergirl sang at Iris and Barry’s first wedding. It also served as an excellent follow-up to The Flash’s 150th landmark episode that celebrated the West-Allen family. Even though Oliver and Felicity should never have crashed their wedding, to begin with, at least The Flash season 7 was able to rectify it for Barry and Iris.
