A new villain is coming to CW’s The Flash season 8 in the form of Tony Curran, who is set to play the alien Despero. First created by Gardner Fox and Mike Sekowsky in 1960 as an opponent for the Justice League of America, Despero hails from the planet Kalanor which is rules as a tyrant. Alongside his genius intellect and incredible strength, Despero also has a third eye which allows him to communicate telepathically, control minds, and gives him telekinesis. The character previously appeared in the animated Justice League series where he was voiced by Keith David.

Curran has most recently appeared in Showtime’s Your Honor opposite Bryan Cranston, in which he played  mob-enforcer Frankie. He has also previously appeared as Sgt. Mikey ‘Rad’ Radulovic in Ray Donovan and as Angus Og Macdonald, the Lord of Islay in Netflix’s Outlaw King which told the story of Robert the Bruce. Curran is also no stranger to comic book adaptations, having had small parts in both 2002’s Blade II and Marvel’s Daredevil series on Netflix.

Per Deadline, Curran is currently filming the eight season of The Flash. Despero will reportedly arrive on Earth to undertake a dangerous mission, one that will put him in direct opposition with Barry Allen and his cohorts. Considering the significance of Despero as a villain in the DC Comics, one that usually requires the Justice League to deal with, it would make sense for Curran to be playing a far more significant role than just a one-off villain.

It was announced earlier this week that The Flash season 8 will kick off  with a five-part crossover event on November 16th that will see other characters from the Arrowverse arrive to aid the Flash, including Javicia Leslie’s Batwoman, Brandon Routh’s The Atom, Cress Williams’s Black Lightning, and Kat McNamara who will reprise her role as Mia Queen. The last big crossover was “Crisis on Infinite Earths” which served to wrap up Arrow as well as Stephen Amell’s time as Green Arrow. With The Flash now the longest running series in the Arrowverseit makes sense for this to be the focal point for franchise’s signature crossover events. The crossover will also see Tom Cavanagh and Neal McDonough return as Eobard Thawn and Damien Darhk, so it will be interesting to see what side they find themselves on.

Titled ‘Armageddon’, the crossover will see an alien threat arrive on Earth, which now seems more than likely to be Curran’s Despero.  It’s worth noting that the various Arrowverse shows have seen a number of guest appearances from David Ramsey’s John Diggle over the past year as he seemingly searched for answers and purpose after being teased to discover a Green Lantern power ring in the Arrow finale. Ramsey has previously teased a ‘cosmic destiny’ for Diggle, and considering that Despero represents an alien threat, this would be perfect opportunity to have Diggle finally become a Green Lantern or at least introduce the Green Lantern Corps. Whether or not this will come to fruition is another matter entirely, but fans won’t have long to wait as The Flash season 8 premieres on November 16th.
