WARNING: This article includes MAJOR spoilers from episodes 9 and 10 of The Flash season 8.

The trailer for The Flash season 8, episode 10, teases Frost getting herself into trouble with the show’s new mysterious big bad. After kicking off the latest season with the special 5-part Armageddon event, The Flash is getting into the midst of pitting Barry Allen and his team against a new super-villain. The Arrowverse drama’s 2022 return initially began with a few standalone installments – also referred to as Interludes by the creative team – before getting into the next major storyline. After The Flash season 7 concluded, showrunner Eric Wallace had teased that one of the new foes would be based in the world of supernatural and horror.

While The Flash has dealt with a lot of metahumans and aliens over the years, the series hasn’t really tackled the supernatural element. As of The Flash season 8, episode 8, the series is getting further into that territory through the arrival of a black fire-based enemy. Many believe it to be some version of Firestorm, since Robbie Amell is returning to the show in a few weeks. In this week’s episode, titled “Phantoms,” Team Flash got up close with the fire-y villain, who also took the form of Chester P. Runk’s deceased father.

Despite it not really being Chester’s late dad, The Flash season 8 is just getting started with the mysterious baddie. Following the airing of “Phantoms,” The CW (via TV Promos) aired a trailer for the tenth episode, titled “Reckless.” Viewers who thought this week’s installment was intense will need to be ready for what is going down in “Reckless” as Frost decides to bait herself to the black fire, which may or may not take a heated turn.

A storyline that is also continuing in “Reckless” from “Phantoms” is Iris West-Allen’s latest case for the Central City Citizen. While Team Flash dealt with the fire foe, Iris and Sue Dearbon headed to Coast City this week, where they encountered a teenager named Tinya Wazzo. To DC fans, Tinya is better known as the Legion of Super-Heroes member Phantom Girl, played by Mika Abdalla, who got cast last year. “Reckless,” which was written by Jess Carson and directed by Kellie Cyrus, teases in its official synopsis about Iris’ next step in helping “a teen girl reunite with her mother,” who turned out to be Tinya, in order to avoid spoilers before “Phantoms” had aired.

While the new enemy is shrouded in mystery, it’s still exciting to see The Flash trying new types of villains, especially as they are now eight seasons into their run. Based on how “Phantoms” went down, it looks like their new big bad will emotionally challenge the team, with grief seemingly as one of the core themes. Even though the show is getting into the middle of its season, viewers were recently able to breathe a sigh of relief for The Flash’s future. While expected, The CW handed out renewals to several series last week, with The Flash being one of the two Arrowverse shows to be part of the 2022-2023 TV season. Given what’s being set up in “Reckless,” time will tell who The Flash‘s black fire foe truly is.
