In The Flash season 8, Team Flash just defeated the crossover-level threat of Armageddon, an event in which Barry Allen destroyed the Earth in an attempt to stop the Reverse-Flash. The crossover event premiered on November 16, 2021, and featured the likes of Batwoman, Mia Queen, the Atom, and Alex Danvers from other Arrowverse shows, before concluding on December 14, 2021. At the end of the final crossover episode, The Flash’s future children, Bart and Nora West-Allen, were shown to mysteriously materialize in the background of a police photo from 2014, teasing many timeline-related problems to come.

TV Promos offered a first look at the newest trailer from the CW series, revealing many points of interest, including Bart and Nora traveling through many key points within the show’s past. Specifically, Eddie Thawne is seen for the first time on the show since season 3, looking on in shock at something appearing in front of him, undoubtedly having something to do with our time-traveling duo. Throughout the rest of The Flash season 8 trailer, the siblings are seen inside Barry’s lab when he became The Flash at the beginning of the show and season 5’s Goldface is seen making his grand return.

Ever since Eddie Thawne’s departure from the show, many fans have theorized how he may eventually make his grand return, either as an ally or adversary to Team Flash. Theories in the past have reported that Thawne may return as the villain Cobalt Blue whose true identity is Malcolm Thawne in the comics, Barry Allen’s long-lost twin brother who returns to enact revenge against his sibling by wielding a blue flame. Since there is no Eddie Thawne in the comics, many believe that he was the show’s adaption of the comics character, leading him to take up the mantle in an inevitable return down the line.

Since moments from the show’s past appear to consistently be visited by Nora and Bart, it can be safe to assume that Eddie’s appearance will take place in a scene from one of his previous appearances, presumably in a Christmas episode from the appearance of the background. Furthermore, whilst he appears to be the same Eddie audiences have grown to love over the years of the show, the return of his character does liven up hopes of him returning as a villain in the future, as previously theorized. The Flash season 8 returns on Wednesday, March 9.
