While Rick Cosnett’s Eddie Thawne had a small role during The Flash season 8 midseason premiere, the showrunner teases the fallen character’s return for more episodes. After an extensive hiatus, The Flash is finally back following its big Armageddon 5-part event. While not a traditional Arrowverse crossover, Barry Allen was joined by various heroes from the other shows, including Black Lightning, Batwoman, the Atom, and many more. As the show resumed its eighth season earlier this week, the midseason opener served as an adventure for Bart and Nora West-Allen, a.k.a. Impulse and XS, respectively.

With the visit to 2013 in the episode, it served as Cosnett’s latest return to the show as he portrayed Detective Thawne long before the events in The Flash season 8. While Cosnett was originally set to appear for just the “flashback” episode, the Arrowverse drama has more plans for the Australian actor. As revealed earlier in the year, the former cast member will appear in a multi-episode arc for at least three episodes. It remains unclear when he will make his next return during The Flash season 8. Even though The CW is keeping details under wraps, Cosnett will reportedly be “embodying” other characters.

As The Flash season 8 is fully underway again, showrunner Eric Wallace has given some new clues about Cosnett’s mysterious return. In a new interview with TVInsider, the executive producer chatted a bit about what fans can expect with Eddie’s upcoming storyline. While not giving it all way, viewers should not expect to see an Eddie from the past, as time travel will play no role in the plot. Here’s what Wallace would say about Cosnett’s multi-arc:

“Well, that would be a big spoiler, wouldn’t it? I will only say this: No. We are not staying in the past, but yes, Eddie is back. I wonder how? [Laughs] That’s a story. No. No, this is a very, very different story. Again. No spoilers here, but let’s just say Eddie coming back after 806 is not what you’re expecting.”

Given that Cosnett is said to play “other characters,” it would make sense if he shows up as Eddie, but is possessed by other deceased characters. One of the upcoming episodes in The Flash season 8 is titled “Phantoms,” which could be where the actor’s new storyline begins. When Cosnett was announced to return for additional episodes, it was noted that they are leaving the door open for him to appear in The Flash season 9, should the show return for another year. That would mean there is a chance that this storyline may not necessarily get wrapped up this season.

It’s interesting that The Flash season 8 is including a lot of familiar faces, especially from the earlier seasons. Another former cast member that is coming back this year is Robbie Amell, who will reprise the role of Ronnie Raymond, a.k.a. one half of the original Firestorm. Just like how Eddie died in the first season, Ronnie was axed at the start of The Flash season 2. Whether or not either of them will be resurrected remains to be seen for now. There are a lot of questions surrounding The Flash right, including it being one of several Arrowverse shows that haven’t been renewed yet. With The Flash‘s unknown fate and how Cosnett’s character comes into the fold, there are many answers viewers are waiting for as the year progresses.
