Update: Watch The Flight Attendant season 2 trailer (featuring Sharon Stone) here!

HBO Max’s hit series The Flight Attendant has set its season 2 release date for this April. The series, which is The Big Bang Theory star Kaley Cuoco’s follow-up project after the blockbuster sitcom went off the air, first premiered in November 2020. The show was developed by Steve Yockey and based on the novel of the same name by Chris Bohjalian. The show was extremely well received, going on to be nominated for 5 Emmys, winning a Creative Arts Emmy for the theme music by Blake Neely, who also worked on the popular Netflix stalker series You.

The Flight Attendant follows Cuoco as Cassie Bowden, a sexually voracious alcoholic flight attendant. One drunken conquest goes horribly wrong when she wakes up next to a murdered man in Bangkok. As events develop and the FBI grills her about the events of that evening, she experiences flashbacks that may be hallucinations and begins to look into exactly what occured that night. Season 1 co-starred Michiel Huisman, Rosie Perez, T. R. Knight, Michelle Gomez, Colin Woodell, Merle Dandridge, Griffin Matthews, Nolan Gerard Funk, and Girls‘ Zosia Mamet.

A teaser released today for The Flight Attendant season 2 came along with the announcement of an official release date. HBO Max will begin airing season 2, which wrapped filming last month, on April 21, 2022. This will be one week before Netflix relaunches their massive series Stranger Things with season 4 part 1, allowing HBO to get their foot in the door before that powerhouse series drops.

The Flight Attendant season 2 follows Cassie after one year of sobriety. She is now attempting to handle being both a flight attendant and a CIA asset, and things will fly almost immediately off the rails when she witnesses another murder. In addition to bumping up Deniz Akdeniz’s Max from a recurring character to a series regular, the show will also be adding Mo McRae (Sons of Anarchy) as Cassie’s CIA handler, as well as Callie Hernandez (Blair Witch) and Joseph Julian Soria (TheOath) as married bounty hunting partners Gabrielle and Esteban Diaz.

The Flight Attendant season 1 told a more or less complete, open-and-shut story, so now the creators are breaking away from the world of the novel into new territory. It will certainly be intriguing to see if they can capture the lightning in a bottle of the first season as they carve their own path going forward. In the past, that approach didn’t work so well for HBO, in many fans’ eyes at least, for the final few seasons of the George R. R. Martin fantasy adaptation Game of Thrones. However, that franchise had a much more polarized fanbase to begin with, so The Flight Attendant likely has a much better shot at sticking the landing.
