The Fog 2 Is In Early Development Says Director John Carpenter

John Carpenter says that a sequel to his 1980 horror film The Fog is in the early stages of development. The Fog came in between two of Carpenter’s masterpieces, Halloween and The Thing, so it is widely overlooked despite being a popular entry in the director’s repertoire. Carpenter brought back Halloween actress Jamie Lee Curtis for the film and convinced her mother, Janet Leigh, to sign on as well. It was the first time the scream queens were on screen together.

The Fog is set in a coastal California town and follows its residents as a mysterious mist settles over their city. The town is celebrating the centennial of its founding and the fog brings some uninvited guests – the ghosts of mariners past, who were killed in a shipwreck off the coast years before. The Fog was remade in 2005 and that version of the film faced even more negative reviews than the original. Despite that, though, The Fog could be making a comeback.

Carpenter, who serves as an executive producer and creative consultant on Halloween Kills, was asked about potential sequels to any of his films. The prolific director told NME that there’s been plenty of discussions about sequels to a number of his films. Carpenter went on to mention The Fog directly, saying that there’s been particular interest in a sequel to that film. Although Carpenter says that they haven’t come to fruition yet “for various reasons,” the director says he is open to the idea.

There’s been talk of a sequel to The Fog. There’s been talk of sequels for a bunch of my movies. They just haven’t happened yet because of various reasons. But yeah, we’ve talked about them and I’m open to them.

Seeing as Carpenter took part in David Gordon Green’s 2018 Halloween sequel, his first time returning to the Halloween franchise since the original, his blessing is a good sign. Halloween serves as a direct sequel to Carpenter’s original film, retconning the numerous ones that came after it, and it arguably revived the Halloween franchise, spawning two sequels, set to be released in 2021 and 2022.  A potential sequel to The Fog could capture that same magic if done right. The Halloween sequels update the slasher genre for the 21st century, tackling themes of generational trauma and mob violence and The Fog 2 could do something similar.

The Fog‘s original story is centered around a group of ancestors who feel betrayed by the town that has reaped all the benefits of their time as mariners without any consequences. These sorts of themes could work well in a sequel and could highlight the ways in which the horror genre has always had socially conscious themes underneath the violence. It’s way too early to tell when The Fog sequel could even come out, but with Carpenter on board, hopefully it happens sooner rather than later.
