Jason Voorhees is undisputedly one of the most iconic slasher villains of all time, coming to life for the first time at the end of Friday the 13th and continuing on to slash up campers across Crystal Lake, Manhattan, and even space. Over the course of twelve movies, more than any other slasher to date, Jason has killed a lot of people in a lot of different ways, but which movie in the series can boast the highest body count?

Whether the murderous blows are delivered by Jason himself or his mother, Pamela Voorhees, Friday the 13th can definitely boast higher body counts for its sequels than most other slasher franchises, in addition to the greater number of movies. From machete slashes to icepick stabbings and brutal sleeping bag thrashings, the Friday the 13th series offers a wide variety of visceral and creative kills.

Starting with the first movie in 1980, the Friday the 13th movies have only gotten more violent and ridiculous over the years. Because of this, it makes sense that one of the later movies would have the highest kill count, and that’s absolutely the case. Coming in at a total of 27 kills, Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993) has the highest body count of the franchise to date.

Jason Goes to Hell boasts the highest kill count of any of the Friday the 13th movies, following Jason Voorhees who, after being blown away by a team of FBI agents, needs to find a way to overcome certain death. When Jason’s bloodied remains are sent to the morgue, his still intact heart hypnotizes a coroner, allowing Jason to take over the man’s body and head back to his favorite stomping grounds: Crystal Lake. All the while, bounty hunter Creighton Duke is hunting him. Clocking in at a total of twenty-seven kills, more than any of the other Friday the 13th movies, Jason Goes to Hell features a lot of possessions and blunt trauma, with significantly less stabbing and slashing than other entries in the franchise, though there is still a bit of that as well.

With the ninth Friday the 13th installment being the most brutal and winning the highest kill count, it also makes sense that the two following installments, Jason X and Freddy vs Jason are the two runners-up for the highest kill count, respectively. Jason X features 25 kills, and Freddy vs Jason includes a body count of 24, with most of those killing blows being delivered by Jason Voorhees himself. All the brutality and craziness that has come from Friday the 13th movies over the course of 40 years, from the original run to crossovers to fan films and remakes, came to a head in Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday. The movie’s plot allows for this incredibly high body count, especially given its run time: 89 minutes. That’s approximately one death every three minutes.

While Blumhouse is still in talks to reboot the Friday the 13th franchise once more, fans can still look to the original series as the most brutal. Starting with kills in the tens and teens, the movies gradually ramped up the absurdity and along with it, the number of kills. The first remake in 2009 returned to the kill scale of the original movies, ending with a modest 15 kills in comparison to later installments in the original run of Friday the 13th.
