Warning: contains a preview of Future State: Gotham #10!

In a new preview for DC Comics’ upcoming issue of Future State: Gotham, the future versions of Batman and the Joker are seen battling for the first time. Not only will this issue see them together in Gotham’s dark future, but it will also prove that the rivalry between the Bat and Clown is a constant in the DC Universe (no matter who’s behind the cowl or wearing the grease paint.) While the outcome of their brawl has yet to be revealed, the preview also teases that Jason Todd’s Red Hood will be right in the middle of it.

In previous issues of Future State: Gotham, it’s been revealed that Jason Todd chose to work with the paramilitary force known as the Magistrate, which has taken over the city and turned it into a fascist state. While the rest of his Bat-Family are part of the resistance movement fighting against them, Red Hood has become Peacekeeper Red to work within the organization and bring it down from the inside. Furthermore, he’s recently become allies with the Next Batman, Jace Fox.

Due to their new partnership, Jason calls Batman in for backup during the hunt for the Next Joker in this new preview for Future State: Gotham #10. Coming from writer Dennis Culver and artist Giannis Milonogiannis, Red Hood and the new Hunter Panic have been closing in on a conspiracy involving some of the biggest criminals in Gotham as well as the classic Batman villain Hush. However, the vicious, cannibalistic Next Joker is involved as well, as Fox’s Batman quickly discovers. Enjoy the preview pages and synopsis for the upcoming issue:

FUTURE STATE GOTHAM #10 – Jason Todd, a.k.a. Peacekeeper Red, and Hunter Panic are helpless to do anything but watch as the new Batman battles his greatest enemy for the first time! Meanwhile, the secret villain who has been the mastermind behind everything since the beginning of Future State: Gotham makes a move that will have repercussions for the entire Bat-Family!

While the synopsis confirms that this is the first time the new Batman and Joker are seen fighting one another, the previous issue did tease that the two had some sort of prior interaction which will likely be revealed when the full issue releases. Additionally, the notorious crime boss Tobias Whale makes the hilarious comment about Gotham never being able to get rid of Batman and the Joker, hoping to kill them and conclude his business before “the next replacements show up.

While Whale’s comments are a comical exaggeration, it does seem as though Batman vs Joker will always be a part of Gotham regardless of the time period and identities underneath. Their legacies are far too iconic for them to ever disappear completely (even one as dark and corrupt as Joker’s.) Readers will be able to pick up the full Future State: Gotham #10 on February 8 to see how the first battle between the future Batman and Joker ends.
