The Good Place was a comedy that always had a moral or ethical significance within its episodes and overall series arc. The show continually asked what it meant to be a good person. By acknowledging that the intent of the action matters, it asked more extensive questions about its central characters and how they responded to the world that they lived in. However, the show did not stop at its main character’s personalities.

It also made it known that, in the world they lived in, it was nearly impossible to be a good person based on the standards of the afterlife points system. Each season had something to say about what it meant to grow as a person and how others can change how you behave. Eleanor, Chidi, Jason, and Tahani were always growing. The way they behaved toward others proved that they needed each other and could improve. The way they treat each other gave Michael an epiphany about how positive reinforcement and interactions have a positive effect on actions moving forward. Here are each of the show’s season, ranked according to their Rotten Tomatoes audience scores.

4 Season 3: 86%

After spending two seasons primarily within the afterlife, season three expands the world of possibility after sending Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason back to Earth at the end of season two. With no memories of each other or their time with Michael and Janet, the four humans unknowingly play out an experiment of who they would have become had they survived the event that killed them in the original timeline.

However, Michael soon discovers that part of the key of the four doing better is that they worked together to change each other. After Michael meddles, the humans come together for Chidi’s thesis on if a near-death experience changes a person’s desire to become better. Yet, it wouldn’t be The Good Place if everyone didn’t end up back in the afterlife, and the final episodes of the season set up the large-scale experiment that would repeat Michael’s initial neighborhood.

3 Season 4: 87%

By re-inventing Michael’s neighborhood, Eleanor, Jason, Tahani, Janet, and Michael study the four chosen humans to see if they naturally get better on their own. Except, it doesn’t take long to realize that the original four humans had only gotten better because they were getting tortured, even if it was unknowingly.

Their actions were a response to possibly getting caught, but the experiment is not the only feature of the final season. After such a long wait, Team Cockroach finally makes it to the real Good Place, although it isn’t as amazing as they hoped. An eternity to do whatever you want eventually gets boring, and, without a reason to believe they exist for something, everyone eventually lost interest in everything.

Thus, Team Cockroach comes up with one last way to change the afterlife, a door that allows someone to leave the Good Place once they experienced everything they have wanted to do and are ready to go. A tear-jerking series finale found all the central characters dealing with their journey and choosing if they wish to stay or leave.

2 Season 2: 89%

A shocking plot-twist in the season one finale makes for an exciting second season. Now that the audience knows that the Good Place is the Bad Place, the viewers are a step ahead of the humans, but it doesn’t last that long. The first three episodes of the season show Michael’s desperation for his new neighborhood to work to such an extent that Michael’s last attempt it number 803. Michael’s allegiances get called into question when he grows attached to the four humans and wants to help them reach the Good Place.

By the end of the season, one of the most critical questions is how the Judge, played by Maya Rudolph, will respond to their plea. As it turns out, the Judge agrees to Michael’s outrageous suggestion, and the final episode of the season sees how Eleanor’s life would have changed if she had lived instead of died.

1 Season 1: 92%

Eleanor Shellstrop is excited to learn that she has earned a spot in the Good Place after dying on Earth. Yet, Eleanor’s relief is short-lived, as she soon discovers that while her name is accurate, the memories of her life are wrong, and the Good Place got the incorrect person.

However, Eleanor chose to truly earn her place among the others instead of turn herself in, with the help of Chidi. However, Eleanor is not the only misplaced person in the neighborhood. Silent Munk, Jianyu, is Jason Mendoza, a DJ from Florida. Between juggling secret identities and trying to pull off a convincing act, Eleanor, Chidi, Jason, and Tahani are unknowingly torturing each other. Yet, such behavior is what Michael had hoped for. The shocking plot-twist of the series is that the Good Place has been the Bad Place, and the four humans were torturing each other during their time in the neighborhood.
