The Good Place webseries The Selection gave The Bad Place the spotlight for a change. The Good Place cast Kristen Bell as Eleanor Shellstrop and season 1 found her awakening in the titular afterlife paradise following her death, which is Eleonor’s reward for a life well lived. Sadly for her, they accidentally picked the wrong Eleanor, and not only does she have to hide this, but she also has to learn how to become a worthwhile human being to avoid going to The Bad Place.

The first season of The Good Place ended with the Earth-shattering reveal that Eleanor and her friends were really in a unique version of The Bad Place designed by kindly architect Michael (Ted Danson), who turns out to be a demon. The show ultimately ran for four seasons and was one of the most inventive sitcoms of the last decade. In addition to its great hook, it constantly found ways to reinvent itself, which also saw it burn through storylines quite fast. Luckily for fans, season 4 ended on an emotional but satisfying note for its heroes, though it seems like a revival is unlikely.

The Good Place season 3 ended with Maya Rudolph’s Judge Gen allowing a redo of Michael’s experiment so he can prove that even bad humans can learn to become better. To keep things fair, The Bad Place demon Shawn (Marc Evan Jackson) is allowed to pick the four human subjects for the test, which forms the premise of the 2019 webseries The Selection.

The Good Place’s “The Selection is comprised of six, two-minute episodes where Shawn and his Bad Place crew – consisting of Bambadjan, Val, Jessica and Glenn – working in a conference room, trying to decide the criteria for the four subjects of the new experiment. It’s basically like a ten-minute episode of the show devoted entirely to The Bad Place, which gives a little more insight into their inner workings, including farts being used as welcomes and their diets, featuring tasty dishes like warm clam chowder or shoe sludge served with dandruff.

Even The Selection’s theme is a distorted version of The Good Place, and it has a red title screen instead of the traditional green. The series ends with Shawn having the brainwave that the new subjects should attack Eleanor and friends at their weakest points, such as using Chidi’s ex Simone in the experiment. The Good PlaceThe Selection is something of a light snack, but for fans of the show who may have missed it the first time around, it’s definitely worth checking out.
