A24 announces that The Green Knight is returning to theaters for a limited Christmas release in honor of the film’s holiday season setting. The medieval fantasy epic hails from acclaimed indie filmmaker David Lowery, who served as director, writer, editor and producer on the project. The Ghost Story director entered development on the project in late 2018 with A24, Ley Line Entertainment and Bron Studios attached to finance and would begin filming the next year with his ensemble cast.

The Green Knight is based on the similarly named 14th-century poem which centers on Sir Gawain, the nephew of King Arthur, as he and the people of Camelot are visited by the titular creature and challenged to land a blow on him with their sword, which would subsequently be returned in equal measure the following year. The young Gawain must then set off come the arrival of the next year in order to meet the Green Knight and uphold his end of the challenge and prove his courage. Dev Patel leads the ensemble cast of The Green Knight as Gawain alongside Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Sean Harris and Ralph Ineson.

At first glance, the decision to bring The Green Knight back to theaters for a limited Christmas theatrical release may seem an odd one, though those familiar with the poem or the film’s story may have an appreciation for it given the plot’s holiday setting. The titular knight’s first appearance in the story comes as the people of Camelot are celebrating Christmas, with the in-film chapter labelling the moment as “…the Christmas Game,” keeping in touch with the source material’s titling of Sir Gawain and. While the film may be noticeably absent of the typical holiday season decor with its 1300s setting, it does make for a film audiences looking for an interesting change of pace could enjoy in favor of typical Christmas titles.

With The Green Knight returning to theaters this week, it will be interesting to see how the film fares at the box office when paired with its already modest haul of $18.9 million during its original July theatrical run. Outside of Steven Spielberg’s already acclaimed West Side Story remake, this weekend’s box office doesn’t hold many high-profile competitors, creating the possibility for first-time or repeat viewers of Lowery’s fantasy epic to boost the film to a higher spot on the charts. Only time will tell when The Green Knight returns to theaters on Friday, December 10.
