The Mockingjay started as the ‘Jabberjay.’ Panem’s Capitol used these genetically modified birds to spy on civilians. Each bird could relay entire conversations back to the Capitol, but the Districts caught on and sent false info.

Once abandoned by the government, the Jabberjays mated with Mockingbirds and created the Mockingjay! From the first book onward, it was seen as a symbol – of both resistance against the harsh government and togetherness.
