Frozone, aka Lucius Best, is one of the most heroic characters in Pixar Animation Studio’s The Incredibles franchise, which is why he has the dialogue to match. There’s a reason why Samuel L. Jackson was chosen for the voice of this character: he’s cool, quick-thinking, and has some incredible superhero one-liners.

The fun thing about Frozone is that he’s got lots of interesting layers, and his quotes often reflect this. Many of his most heroic statements aren’t even very obvious, giving him a more subtle style that really works for the character – and some really show how his real life and his superhero life collide.

10 “We Are Talking About The Greater Good”

Lucius and Bob hide their heroics from their wives, and while it’s unclear whether or not Honey was a former super like Helen, she certainly doesn’t approve of him out risking their anonymity or his life. Although he’s maintained his secret heroics, when Frozone sees the city in immediate peril he may very well risk his happiness in his relationship when he announces that he must participate in the battle.

“The public is in danger!” he insists. After she responds, he counters with, “We are talking about the greater good!” It’s clear that being a hero is important to him

9 “Where’s My Super Suit?”

Despite the fact that Jackson says kids just don’t recognize him when their parents point him out as Frozone, this is the quote that would give him away instantaneously. In the first film, as soon as he sees danger, he jumps to action. Noticing his suit isn’t in its place, he calls to Honey, whom we still haven’t met on screen, save for a reprise of in a deleted scene, “Where’s my super suit?”

Without context, it’s just a question and not so heroic. But given that only a super will request his “super suit” and that Frozone’s inquiry means he’s about to go ice the city to protect it, it’s one of his best heroic moments in the movie.

8 “The Black Superhero Gets Caught”

In the short 2005 animated film Mr. Incredible and Pals, Frozone and Mr. Incredible witness a cartoon parody that’s been produced based on their adventures. Among general ridiculousness, including a goofy rabbit sidekick and a made-up villain, the show carries implicit racism and Frozone wants no part of it.

Lucius calls out many problems with the show, especially the change of his race and what happens to him in it. “Oh, oh, oh, I get caught. The Black superhero gets caught!” he says. Mr. Incredible reminds him that his character was made white, and Frozone amends, “Oh, that’s right. The tan superhero gets caught!” Given how problematic cartoons, especially older ones, can be in terms of representation and prejudice, Frozone’s commentary is important, even if it’s meant to be funny.

7 “I’ll Be There ASAP”

During the sequel film, Frozone again demonstrates his willingness to drop everything in order to serve the greater good. When called upon, whether for duty or simply his friend, he answers, “I’ll be there ASAP.” This statement might be simple, but it demonstrates both his commitment to join the battle immediately, no questions asked, as well as his acknowledgment of the situation as a superhero. It calls for brevity and a quick response, and he’s given both.

The moment is also funny a nod to the first film. When Honey overhears his short conversation, she calls, “Where are you going ASAP? You better be back ASAP!”

6 “Good To See You”

Per the Disney Heroes: Battle Mode game, fans already know that Frozone was born with his powers. With skills like “Stay Frosty” and “Frostbite,” not to mention his cool victory animation where he makes an ice statue of himself and shatters it with a fist bump, the game version of Frozone only adds to the character’s coolness factor.

But both Frozone’s heroism and coolness really shine in a low-key display when a flabbergasted fan stammers over being his biggest fan. Frozone gives the fan grace and smoothly says, “Good to see you,” both saving him from embarrassment and making his day.

5 “I Know, I Know. Freeze.”

Jackson’s favorite scene for his character in Incredibles 2 is when Lucius visits Bob at home, as it’s one of those situations where his friend has no idea what he got himself into. His calm, cool demeanor almost seems to be an extension of his superpower in the first movie when he and Bob are caught by the police as they attempt to continue their secret hero work.

In this moment, Frozone saves them both by getting a drink of water. He delivers a fun line that both turns the tables on the police and proves that superhero quips aren’t always directed at the bad guys. “I know, I know. Freeze.”

4 “Hurt Then, Too”

Frozone isn’t invulnerable and really risks more than Mr. Incredible at a crime scene. He reveals this when he remarks that their fighting is “just like old times,” going on to laugh and say, “Ha ha, yeah. Hurt then, too. Ow.”

Samuel L. Jackson has stated that being a superhero in this franchise “is an avocation, not a vocation,” and that each character still has to do something else to put a roof over their heads. That’s why it’s even more heroic for Lucius and Bob to go on saving people, even while in hiding. It might be for the glory as well, but the two definitely want to use their gifts to help others.

3 “One More Jolt Of This Death Ray And I’m An Epitaph”

One of the best things about The Incredibles is how they play with superhero tropes – including the villain monologue, something that even the villain in the first film likes to laugh about.

“One more jolt of this death ray and I’m an epitaph,” Frozone reminisced with Mr. Incredible. It’s not just the clever way he explains how he was toast in the villain’s grasp before he started monologuing, but the scene his statement sets. It’s clear that he’s had many heroic adventures and that villain monologuing is a pet peeve.

2 “Well, Isn’t That Redundant”

“Well, isn’t that redundant? The Deavors just sent me to guard the house.” While Jackson never got to sing his own theme song, as he says he would have loved to have done, he did get to say this cool quote in the second movie as he saunters up to the Parr house, cool as ever, to protect the children from a group of supers under mind control.

As soon as his body blocks the kids from the supers, Frozone says, “Because the kids aren’t safe,” turning the tables on the supers who made the claim moments before. It’s a wonderful moment that demonstrates his smoothness as a hero as well as how much he cares for the Parr kids.

1 “Frozone Is Only Involved In Quality Work”

Samuel L. Jackson didn’t only have faith in the second movie eventually coming to fruition; he also kept “poking and prodding,” attempting to make it happen. Like Frozone, he has pride in putting forth quality work, which is why he likely shared similar sentiments with the Mr. Incredible and Pals spoof short. In addition to the comment about the show’s racism, he has several complaints.

“Frozone is only involved in quality work,” he says, “Crappy animation reflects badly on me.” He tells Bob that he owes him one and that “this is a stain on my otherwise spotless endorsement record.” Finally, he makes a truly super remark, intoning, “I’m telling you, this thing better never see the light of day.”
