During a recent podcast appearance, The Last of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann said an outline for TLoU Part 3’s narrative is already complete; however, the project itself has not entered development. Similar to Part 1 before it, TLoU Part II ends in a way that does invite further exploration of Ellie’s story. What that may entail, of course, remains a mystery. And, interestingly, Druckmann has already acknowledged the difficulty of traversing new ground in the series.

The sequel launched last summer on PlayStation 4 to great fanfare, taking place several years after the ambiguous final moments of the original installment. Ellie, now 19, travels across the U.S. on a revenge quest to make right a wrong done to her and her loved ones. It’s a harrowing journey, one beset by immense challenge and a slew of additional heartbreaks. In true Last of Us fashion, the sequel ends on a rather ambitious note, answering a few questions while countless others linger in the background. Naughty Dog has yet to confirm whether it will venture into the apocalyptic world once more, but some of the studio’s creatives obviously have an idea of how they’d like to expand upon TLoU Part II’s ending.

The Last of Us Part II scribes Neil Druckmann and Halley Gross appeared on the latest episode of the Script Apart podcast. During the interview, Druckmann told host Al Horner (via IGN) that he and Gross have already penned an outline for what could be the franchise’s third entry. However, this particular endeavor remains an idea that the writing duo and the crew at Naughty Dog are not in the process of developing. Drcukmann shared the following:

“I don’t know how much I want to reveal… [co-writer Halley Gross] and I did write an outline for a story, that we’re not making – but I hope one day can see the light of day – that explores a little bit what happens after this game. We’ll see.”

This revelation doesn’t come as too much of a surprise, given that early work on TLoU Part II’s story began shortly after the first game shipped. Still, there is presently no guarantee that a TLoU Part 3 will ever make it past the page.

Fans have no shortage of TLoU content to look forward to in the future, though. For one, the Factions multiplayer component is still in the works at Naughty Dog. A TV series starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie, respectively, will begin filming this summer. And recent reports suggest a remake of the original game is also in production, though neither Naughty Dog nor Sony have corroborated said claims.
