New photos pulled from the set of HBO’s The Last of Us look very much like the original game. Naughty Dog’s video game franchise has permeated popular culture ever since its first entry was released nearly a decade ago. Throughout the years, there has been talk of a The Last of Us feature film; however, creator Neil Druckmann eventually decided that an adaptation would be better suited for the small screen.

Now, Druckmann is executive producing and co-writing HBO’s The Last of Us alongside Craig Mazin (Chernobyl)—which is also PlayStation Productions’ first television series. The first season will be comprised of ten episodes and follow Joel Miller as he smuggles one very important teenager, Ellie, across a country ravaged by the infected. Earlier this year, it was announced that Game of Thrones alums Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey would be playing Joel and Ellie, respectively. The series will also star Nico Parker as Joel’s daughter, Sarah, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Anna Torv as Tess, and Merle Dandridge, who reprises her role of Marlene from the games. Filming for the pilot recently wrapped as production is well underway in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

The Last of Us’ pilot will presumably adapt the events of the game’s prologue, introducing viewers to Joel as a young, single father in Austin, Texas escaping the initial outbreak—previously leaked set photos/videos and a pre-outbreak picture posted to Luna’s Instagram seem to have confirmed as much. The bulk of the post-apocalyptic story takes place over twenty years after that initial outbreak, picking up with Joel and Tess in the Boston Quarantine Zone before getting involved with Marlene and meeting Ellie.

The Last of Us has been hyped as one of the most expensive productions (a reported eight-figure cost per episode) currently filming in Canada. From the dirty buildings and barbed wire to the Fedra signs and, inevitably, clickers, HBO’s faithful live-action series looks to honor arguably one of the best video games of all time. With familiar yet different characters and entirely new ones, the series should flesh out details long-time fans think they know. That being said, as long as the series builds around its central relationship, audiences will certainly be pleased. A premiere date has not been confirmed but rumors point to late next year.
