The Last of Us star Pedro Pascal provides an exciting update as production on the upcoming HBO series continues. News of a long-awaited adaptation of Naughty Dog’s best-selling video game, The Last of Us, was incredibly well-received when it was first announced back in early 2020. Set to tell the same story as the game, audiences will follow Joel Miller (Pascal) as he accompanies a young girl named Ellie across an apocalyptic wasteland. Pascal’s fellow Games of Thrones alumni, Bella Ramsey, will star as Ellie who, unbeknownst to Joel, holds the key to a cure for the parasitic brain virus that has rapidly spread across America.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Filming officially commenced last July, with a number of exciting set videos making their way on social media which teased the impressive scale of the series’ production. Each one of the series’ 10 episodes are rumored to have been granted an eight-figure budget in order to bring the video game to life, with filming on the series expected to continue through into this summer. No release date has been confirmed for The Last of Us series as of yet, however, HBO’s Chief Content Officer, Casey Bloys, recently revealed that he had seen some early episodes, and praised what he had seen so far as “amazing.” Now, as production continues, Pascal has offered an update and opened up about how the experience of making The Last of Us has been for him.

Currently promoting his latest project, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, at SXSW, Pascal spoke to ComicBook.com and was asked what it was like on the set of The Last of Us, and whether he is surrounded by “clickers and spores” (just two of the dystopian elements Pascal’s character faces within the game) while shooting. Pascal confirmed that these are in fact present on the set, before sharing that he is having an “amazing time” bringing The Last of Us story to life. Acknowledging the series’ somewhat lengthy production process, Pascal went on to say “I don’t know if we’ll make it, but went on to assure fans that “it will be completely worth it.” Check out Pascal’s full quote below.

“[The set] is covered in clickers and spores and the elements of Alberta, and we’re having an amazing time. It’s totally harrowing and I don’t know if we’ll make it, but it will be completely worth it. It is amazing and I’m having an amazing time. I don’t know if i’ll make it!”

Pascal was then asked if he was aware of Joel’s unfortunate fate that was established in the game’s sequel, The Last of Us 2. The Mandalorian star then confirmed he is in fact aware of his character’s ultimate demise, and that he isn’t even sure if he will “make it” to this particular plot development. Up to this point, The Last of Us series has largely remained shrouded in mystery in terms of its plot, with any official teasers not expected to release until production officially wraps later this year.

It’s certainly exciting to hear that Pascal has had such a positive experience throughout The Last of Us’ production so far, especially given the “harrowing” themes that feature heavily within the original story. While there is still a long way to go until The Last of Us makes its way to audiences, many will likely find it reassuring that so much hard work is going into the creation of the series, and that it is confirmed to include some major game-accurate elements. As for now, it’s fair to say Pascal is certainly among those who cannot wait to finally see The Last of Us hit the small screen.
