When it comes to The Legend Of Zelda, the main hero, Link, comes across a wide variety of characters across the many timelines and incarnations, all of which have their iconic moments. In The Legend Of Zelda franchise, there are plenty of strong female characters, both hero and villain alike, that Link meets.

The female characters, including the titular Zelda herself, are usually stand-out characters. Link, in most of the games, is a blank slate, so the women end up getting more development than he does. In many of the cases, they back up their strong personalities with incredible skills and powers.

10 Medli (The Wind Waker)

This young Rito from Dragon Roost Island turns out to be the Sage Of Earth later on in The Wind Waker. However, that is not what grants Medli a spot on this list. Instead, it’s her courage and determination to do the right thing. Even if it means putting her life at risk to help Link or her friend Komali, she will do it.

The strength of Medli comes from her character. She ends up being a Sage and helps Link save Hyrule from Ganondorf, and she even is the one to save Link and Zelda after the difficult boss fight against Ganondorf in the climax.

9 Linkle (Hyrule Warriors)

A character that is often forgotten is the female version of Link known as Linkle. She debuted in Hyrule Warriors wielding dual crossbows, giving her a unique weapon in a game already jam-packed with a plethora of weapons and abilities.

Linkle was also given more development than her male counterpart. She believes herself to be a reincarnation of Link, but it is unconfirmed if she is or not. That doesn’t stop her from making a green cloak and heading off to fight for Hyrule herself.

8 Guardian Impa (Various)

Impa has had quite the evolution over the years. In earlier games, Impa was depicted as a wise old sage that guided Link on his journey. Later on, Nintendo would revitalize Impa into Princess Zelda’s bodyguard, and she would become a fearsome warrior that would give the Amazons from Wonder Woman a run for their money.

This version of Impa would be featured in Ocarina Of Time, Skyward Sword, and both Hyrule Warriors games, but Age Of Calamity introduced one of the most unique versions of Impa. Not much is ever divulged about her origins, but she is always depicted as a stoic but loyal friend of the royal family who will give her life for Zelda.

7 Fi (Skyward Sword)

Despite her tendency to annoy the player with the controller’s battery being low, Fi is an impressive character. Mixing science fiction and magic, Fi is the soul of the Goddess Sword in the form of a majestic android who glides like a ballerina. Fi is part of the ancient magic that grants Link power through the swords.

She even bonds with the famous Master Sword later on in Skyward Sword. Fi also is one of the few times a companion is given development, forging emotions and a genuine friendship over the course of the story. It leads to the two having a heartbreaking goodbye once her purpose is fulfilled.

6 Twinrova (Various)

The twin witches Kotake and Koume reside in the Spirit Temple in Ocarina Of Time, as well as in the Oracle of Ages and Seasons games. They control the powers of fire and ice, already providing quite the challenge for Link. In desperation, the twins merge into one powerful being known as Twinrova, one of the most underrated Zelda characters.

What was already a difficult boss fight later verges on rage-inducing for a lot of fans. Twinrova dual-wields fire and ice powers, forcing Link to use proper strategy. Unfortunately, Twinrova’s strength mainly comes from her abilities, as they are given little to no development as a villain.

5 Urbosa (Breath Of The Wild)

While Nabooru from Ocarina Of Time earns respect, Urbosa from Breath Of The Wild was unanimously praised. Urbosa is even the favorite character of the game director. She is the chief of the Gerudo and a Champion of Hyrule, showcasing a strong woman who leads her tribe of female warriors while commanding the Divine Beast Vah Naboris.

Urbosa is also praised due to her relationship with Zelda, viewing her like a little sister. In the Age Of Calamity prequel game, Urbosa was playable and proved to be a fan favorite thanks to her abilities and awesome scimitar.

4 Princess Zelda (Various)

Although her name is in nearly every single game of the franchise, Zelda herself can depend on the game. There are games where she is mainly a damsel in distress for Link to save, while, in others, she is equally as much of a fighter as Link or is at least helpful in the fight battles.

Skyward Sword earned praise by finally giving Link and Zelda a strong relationship that gamers actually cared about. She can even fight in different forms as either Zelda or her alter ego Sheik depending on the game. Usually, the 3D console titles do the titular princess justice, as well, with Breath Of The Wild giving her the best character arc.

3 Cia (Hyrule Warriors)

A protector of the Triforce as well as a seer of the overly complicated Zelda timeline, Cia is a powerful sorceress who fell in love with Link, but, due to his destiny, she could never have him. This led to her becoming corrupted by Ganondorf and separating her good side from herself, creating her new dark and evil self.

Cia is one of the more overlooked villains of the series but she shows character. She has selfish needs and wants Link for herself, which is a more relatable motivation than what most Zelda villains recieve. At the same time, she is still a powerful sorceress that broke the timeline in Hyrule Warriors and commanded armies of monsters and characters from across the eras, as well as wielded her own power of darkness.

2 Lana: Hyrule Warriors

The good that separated from Cia formed a new person, Lana, who helps Link in restoring the realm and keeps Cia from completing her quest, even if that means sacrificing herself. She mixes acrobatics, powerful spells, and control over lightning to fight her way through swarms of enemies.

Lana being a White Sorceress and a pure representation of virtue allowed her to defeat her dark sister and turn her back to the side of good. Both Lana and Cia would return to their realm as twin watchers of Hyrule. On top of all this, she can summon Deku Trees.

1 Midna: Twilight Princess

One of the darkest and most tragic characters of Zelda is Midna, the titular character from Twilight Princess. Midna hails from the Twilight Realm and was actually a powerful being until she was cursed and overthrown by Zant, transforming her into the imp-like creature that guides Link.

At full power, she is almost god-like, which is why Zant had to curse her to overthrow her. Even in her imp form, she can phase through matter, shapeshift, and transform Link into his famous wolf form. Behind her sassy and nonchalant demeanor is a character that lost everything and is trying her hardest to get it back while saving Hyrule at the same time.
