The Mandalorian shocked Star Wars fans when Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker showed up to save the day at the end of the season finale of season two. Most fans seem to be very happy with his cameo in the series, though some have preferred The Mandalorian steer clear of Jedi all together.

But, Luke is now a major part of the show, even if he doesn’t appear again. His role in the future of Grogu has major implications for season three, as well as the rest of the series. Luke’s appearance ultimately benefits not just the series, but his overall story, as well.

10 It Wouldn’t Have Made Sense If He Didn’t Show Up

Some fans may have preferred the series stay away from the larger overall story of Star Wars ,and that is understandable. The Mandalorian is certainly strong enough on its own. But, narratively, it would not have made sense for Luke Skywalker not to show up given the series’ focus on Grogu and his ability in the Force.

Luke is the only known Jedi at this point in the story so soon after Return of the Jedi, and the moment Grogu sat on the Seeing Stone at the Jedi Temple on Tython, Luke’s arrival was inevitable.

9 Other Jedi Could Still Be Out There

Luke’s arrival doesn’t mean other Jedi can’t be out there in the galaxy or that there weren’t other Force users that didn’t hear Grogu’s call from Tython. Several other characters could have heard Grogu, including Cal Kestis, Ezra Bridger, or perhaps even Supreme Leader Snoke.

All of that could lead to consequences in season three, or possibly other series or media involving those characters. Perhaps Luke Skywalker’s eventual Jedi Order congeals in part because of Grogu’s actions.

8 Din Is The Ruler Of Mandalore… And Enemy Of The Jedi

A lot was left up in the air at the end of Chapter 16. One of the biggest dangling threads is that Din Djarin is now the wielder of the Darksaber. His defeat of Moff Gideon gave him claim to the ancient Mandalorian weapon and put him into direct conflict with Bo-Katan Kryze, who needs it to reclaim the throne of Mandalore.

It potentially also puts Din Djarin in conflict with Luke Skywalker. The Jedi and Mandalorians are historical enemies, and, should the training of Grogu go sideways, things could get complicated.

7 Luke Vs. Boba Fett

Another major potential conflict the arrival of Luke Skywalker sets up is with Boba Fett. The two dueled briefly on a skiff over the Pit of Carkoon in Return of the Jedi. That didn’t end so well for Boba, but now he’s back and taking no prisoners, as Bib Fortuna found out.

If Boba Fett gets up to some criminal enterprising in The Book of Boba Fett or he pursues a vendetta against his old enemies, it could lead to a rematch between the two characters.

6 The Ghost of Yoda

The revelation in Chapter 13, “The Jedi,” that Grogu had been at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant prior to the Clone Wars raises all sorts of questions. Many questions remain about The Mandalorian’s timeline, but, now, fans know Grogu likely encountered another famous member of his still-unnamed species, Yoda.

If Luke is in communion with the Force ghost of Yoda, it’s very possible that he could make an appearance in season three. It’s possible Grogu also has a connection to Yaddle, the only other known member of their species.

5 The Mystery Of Who Saved Grogu

Chapter 13 answered a lot of major questions about Grogu, but one big one that remains revolves around who rescued him from the Jedi Temple during the events of Order 66. This was likely another Jedi, but who?

An answer could be in the season’s closing moments thanks to the interaction between Luke Skywalker and Grogu. Their training could unlock more memories for the apprentice Jedi. The anonymous rescuer could be significant, given the mystery surrounding their identity, but time will tell.

4 The Apprentice

Much of this period of Star Wars is a mystery for fans, especially when it comes to the lives of the heroes from the original trilogy. Luke Skywalker opens the door to learning much more. At this point, about five years after Return of the Jedi, Luke’s most significant apprentice is about four years old.

Ben Solo eventually grows up to become Kylo Ren—and just gets worse and worse—and betray his master and fellow students. It’s unclear if his training has started at such a young age, but it’s possible he and Grogu could share lessons.

3 The Princess

What is for certain is that Ben Solo’s mother, Princess Leia, trained as a Jedi not long before this period in the story. Though she ultimately rejected that path, she is still powerful in the Force. Her role in the politics of the New Republic also gives her an enormous stake in what is happening in the Outer Rim.

One of Princess Leia’s most badass moments came when she schooled her brother in their training session in The Rise of Skywalker. It’s very possible now with the inclusion of Luke that she could appear and play a role in Grogu’s training.

2 The Beginning Of The End

The most foreboding element to Luke’s appearance is what it means for Grogu’s future. The fate of Luke’s Jedi Order is known. At some point prior to the sequel trilogy, Ben Solo betrays his master and burns the temple. Several students die in the catastrophe. Was Grogu one of them? It would be very tragic for the child’s story to end this way. It likely won’t, but a major part of season three will be about how Grogu’s fate diverges from that of Luke Skywalker and Ben Solo.

1 Adds To Luke’s Journey

Fans have been dying to see Luke Skywalker in his prime for years. Many hoped to see a powerful Luke Skywalker in the sequel trilogy. The Luke Skywalker who summarily hacks through an entire platoon of powerful Dark Troopers is what some fans wanted to see. But, it’s only a step in his ultimate journey. His power in his prime perhaps contributes to his myopia about his ability to train Ben Solo in the future. Seeing Luke in this era helps complete his overall story in the Skywalker Saga.
