Luke Skywalker is back. Many fans thought they’d seen the last of the iconic Star Wars character when he appeared as a force ghost in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, having died in The Last Jedi two years previously. However, everybody was surprised when he then made a fleeting cameo at the end of The Mandalorian, taking Grogu from Din Djarin to begin his training.

It was a memorable moment for the Jedi Knight and his slaughtering of Moff Gideon’s Dark Troopers will definitely live long in the memory of fans. Luke was wearing a near-identical outfit to the one he donned in Return of the Jedi. There are numerous costumes the Jedi Knight has worn over the years, and these are them in chronological order.

10 Farmboy

Fans were first introduced to the character of Luke Skywalker back in 1977’s A New Hope. He sports a farmboy outfit in this blockbuster, with his story beginning on the sandy shores of Tatooine. The white is reflective of his innocence and angelic nature but his life with Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen is turned upside down when C-3PO and R2-D2 enter the picture. With his family slaughtered by the Empire, he’s forced to flee and begins his training as a Jedi Knight with Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The farmboy outfit is so popular that it was added to Star Wars: Battlefront 2, the video game that released in 2017. It’s become synonymous with the character and, when fans think of Luke, it’s one of the first costumes that springs to mind.

9 X-Wing Pilot Suit

Luke joins the Rebel Alliance once they’re able to come to the rescue of Princess Leia Organa, who is held prisoner by Darth Vader on board the first Death Star. He then abandons his blaster to take to the skies in an X-wing, becoming a hero of the Rebel Alliance by destroying the space station with a little bit of help from partner in crime Han Solo. During this sequence, he sports the Rebel Alliance’s orange jumpsuit which, though a bit of an eyesore, he manages to pull off.

He meets Biggs Darklighter shortly before jetting off, with the two’s relationship expanded upon further in a deleted scene. Luke, deservedly, is recognized for his heroism at the end of a movie during a ceremony held on Yavin IV. Speaking of which…

8 Yavin Ceremony Outfit

Luke decides to dress up rather smartly for the awards ceremony at the end of A New Hope, donning brown trousers and a bright yellow jacket for the occasion. This, like the farmboy outfit, is one that made its way onto Battlefront 2. And he only wears it for a mere number of minutes before the credits roll.

Of course, while it’s good seeing Luke get the praise he deserves, the same can’t be said for Chewbacca. He’s unfortunately not given a medal, something that sparked a big backlash and was only rectified when The Rise of Skywalker came out in 2019.

7 Hoth Outfit

At the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back, Luke sports wintery gear while on the planet of Hoth. There’s thick padding to protect him from the snow, goggles as well, and also wooly gloves. The former Tatooine resident finds himself in a spot of bother on Hoth when he’s attacked by a Wampa, relying on his lightsaber to get to safety. Even that’s not enough, and he would have perished in the horrendous conditions had both Han Solo and Obi-Wan Kenobi not come to his aid.

Luke is fortunately nursed back to health via a Bacta Tank, a healing chamber that also appears in Rogue One. Kenobi tells him to go to the Dagobah system, which he does to begin his training with Master Yoda. This brings up the next point…

6 Training Outfit

Dagobah is a rather humid planet and Jedi training is far from easy, which means Luke decides to change into a vest during his training scenes with Master Yoda. He does get rather sweaty, after all. Luke initially encounters the Jedi Master and finds him to be rather disturbed, definitely not considering him to be the powerful being he’s looking for. But he’s surprised when Yoda announces himself and puts Luke through a series of challenging tests.

Luke disappoints Yoda for the most part, with the latter considering the former farmboy to be far too impatient to train. Skywalker fails when he fights Darth Vader in a cave, beheading the Sith Lord – which isn’t their way.

5 Bespin Outfit

Luke angers Yoda and the force ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Empire Strikes Back when he races to the planet of Bespin to save friends from the villainous Darth Vader. He then changes his appearance again, donning an outfit that has now become iconic – and with enough pockets for you to hide anything you want.

It’s best remembered for being Luke’s clothing when Vader drops the bombshell that he’s the Jedi’s father. That’s probably the biggest twist in movie history, never mind Star Wars history. Luke only wears the outfit once before changing into medical gear as he steps up his recovery.

4 Jedi Knight

Many thought Luke’s attire in Return of the Jedi hinted he’d turn to the dark side. Having worn lighter-colored clothing during the previous two installments of the original trilogy, his all-black outfit suggested he could be about to embark down a different path. It’s even hinted at within the movie, with Luke struggling to keep his emotions in check as the Rebel Alliance takes the fight to the Empire.

Fortunately, he’s able to defeat Emperor Palpatine (at least temporarily) and turns Anakin Skywalker back to the light side. He wears a near-identical outfit during The Mandalorian when he cuts through Dark Troopers and saves Grogu, Din Djarin, and the others from near-certain death. And, if he gets his own TV series, he’ll most likely be sporting the same look once again.

3 Ahch-To

Fans thought they’d get at least a glimpse of Mark Hamill’s character when The Force Awakens hit screens back in December 2015. Yet they only did at the end of the movie, with Rey climbing up the stone steps of Ahch-To to meet Luke. She passes him his old lightsaber, the same one he lost because of Darth Vader during the events of The Empire Strikes Back, yet he rejects it in the following movie.

Luke wears Jedi robes similar to those worn by Obi-Wan Kenobi during the original trilogy, showing how he’s grown wiser with age. Plus, the hood helps make his reveal so awesome. This is also his same outfit in The Rise of Skywalker when he appears to Rey as a force ghost and urges her to face Palpatine and bring peace to the galaxy.

2 Everyday Robes

Also during his time on Ahch-To, Luke changes into an all-black outfit. He wears this while he trains Rey, putting the former Jakku scavenger through her paces. It’s reflective of his mindset at the time, with Luke in a pit of despair following Ben Solo’s turn to the dark side.

With that happening, Han Solo no longer around and the First Order on the rise, so it’s definitely not a happy time for the former Tatooine resident. It’s similar but slightly different to the final entry on this list…

1 Jedi Master

Luke doesn’t technically leave the island of Ahch-To during The Last Jedi. Instead, as the Resistance take their final stand against the First Order on the planet of Crait, he force-projects himself across the galaxy. In a truly epic scene, the Jedi Knight emerges from the shadows to engage Kylo Ren in lightsaber combat – eventually managing to leave his nephew with some big egg on his face. He’s got a haircut, a shorter beard, and wears black and white – symbolizing his mixed emotions as he confronts his relative.

Unfortunately, Luke then dies shortly afterward. His sacrifice came at a huge cost and it allows the Resistance to live to fight another day, getting them out of a rather sticky situation. It would’ve been preferred if he fought Ben Solo physically rather than from afar, but fans were definitely enthralled by that battle nonetheless.
