Ahsoka Tano officially made her live-action Star Wars debut in The Mandalorian season 2, but what exactly is her species? Rosario Dawson portrayed the Force-sensitive female for her long-awaited arrival, which occurred in the season’s fifth episode titled “The Jedi.” Mandalorian Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) found Ahsoka on Corvus where she was able to connect with the Child, revealing his name to be Grogu. She also unearthed the fact that he was trained at the Jedi Temple prior to the fall of the Republic. While Ahsoka might be a new character in the eyes of some viewers of The Mandalorian, others would recognize her as the primary focus of Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

When Ahsoka was first introduced in 2008’s The Clone Wars, she was a Jedi Padawan assigned to Anakin Skywalker. She then served as the lead character for The Clone Wars animated TV series, acting as a Padawan-commander of the 501st Legion in the Grand Army of the Republic. After leaving the Jedi Order, Ahsoka went into hiding. When she reappeared in Star Wars Rebels, which took place 14 years after the events of The Clone Wars, Ahsoka was a rebel agent working under the codename of “Fulcrum.” Following the Battle of Endor, Ahsoka went on a journey to find fellow rebel, Ezra Bridger, sometime around her appearance in The Mandalorian.

Ahsoka can be easily recognized in the Star Wars universe due to her distinct look. She has orange skin with white markings in addition to lekku, or “head tails,” and montrals. Her lekku, in particular, is white with blue stripes. Due to Ahsoka’s head tails, she’s often confused for being a member of the Twi’lek species, who also have long lekku. Some of the most notable Twi’leks include Bib Fortuna and The Mandalorian’s Xi’an. Ahsoka, however, is native to Shili, the homeworld of the Togruta species. Though the former Jedi Padawan is the most prominent Togruta in Star Wars canon, there have been others before her.

What Has Been Revealed About The Togruta Species In Star Wars Canon

Togrutas are known for their colorful skin, including shades of red, yellow, blue, and of course, orange. Like Ahsoka, they have long lekku and montrals, which allowed them to sense movements through echolocation. Torgutas are also known to be carnivorous, living in the mountainous habitat of Shili or large colonies on the planet Kiros. The species is recognized for working together as a large group rather than individualism. They also value beauty and art among their culture in the galaxy.

The first Tortuga introduced in canon was Shaak Ti, a Jedi Master who appeared in Star Wars: Episode II –Attack of the Clones. As a member of the Jedi Order and Jedi High Council, Shaak Ti fought key battles during the Clone Wars. She was later killed during the Great Jedi Purge by Anakin Skywalker. Kirames Kaj was another noteworthy Togruta that made her debut in the 2019 novel, Master & Apprentice, by Claudia Gray. In 40 BBY, Kaj served as Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic. While it’s possible more of the species appears in the near future, Ahsoka’s presence in The Mandalorian will continue to steal the spotlight.
