Marvel Studios has revealed a synopsis for The Marvels. On Monday, Marvel dropped a sizzle reel that featured new footage and confirmed release dates for a host of forthcoming Phase 4 films, including Captain Marvel 2, which is officially titled The Marvels, referring to its multiple heroes with “Marvel” in their names. Monday’s announcements from Marvel prove they have big plans for Phase 4. After forgoing any theatrical releases in 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the MCU is looking to return to cinemas in 2021 with a loaded lineup that starts with Black Widow, Shang-Chi, and Eternals.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Next year’s slate will arguably be more packed than this year’s, as all four installments will be highly-anticipated sequels. The last of this group to be released will be The Marvels, which will follow up 2019’s Captain Marvel. Brie Larson will reprise her role as the titular hero, a former Air Force pilot named Carol Danvers, who also turned up in Avengers: Endgame to save the day by destroying Thanos’ warship. With Nia DaCosta (Candyman, 2021) taking over the reins as director, The Marvels will also feature Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani), who will be introduced in her Disney+ show later this year, and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), who first appeared as a child in Captain Marvel and as an adult S.W.O.R.D. agent in WandaVision.

With The Marvels’ release still far away, not much is known about the cast or plot. However, Marvel Studios did reveal a few hints in a recently released synopsis that teases a “cosmic adventure with Carol, Monica, and Kamala.” The synopsis, which was posted on Marvel’s website, can be read below:

Marvel Studios’ The Marvels will feature Brie Larson returning to the role of Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers. In the film, she’ll be joined by Teyonah Parris, who was first introduced as adult Monica Rambeau in Marvel Studios’ WandaVision, along with Iman Vellani, who will appear as Ms. Marvel in the upcoming Disney+ series of the same name.

Prepare to experience it and fly higher, further, and faster with the film, directed by Nia DaCosta!

Judging by this synopsis, it appears The Marvels will be a space-faring adventure similar to the first Captain Marvel film, which saw Earth at the center of a galactic conflict between two alien civilizations, the Kree and the Skrulls. Though the synopsis does not offer much in terms of plot, it does confirm that Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel will appear. However, this was likely already the case.

While it is difficult to glean much from this synopsis, fans have previously speculated about the plot of the Captain Marvel sequel based on WandaVision’s post-credits scene in which a Skrull agent reveals herself to Monica, telling her an old friend wants to see her in space. The sequel could also further explore Carol and Monica’s relationship, which WandaVision also revealed may be more complicated than initially thought. Until there is more news regarding The Marvels, fans will speculate based on the currently available information.
