The new trailer for The Matrix Resurrections has secretly confirmed how Neo is still alive. The long-awaited fourth installment in the Matrix franchise recently dropped its first trailer and showed audiences a taste of what to expect when the sequel hits theaters in December. One of the biggest lingering questions about the story is how Neo has come back to life, and exactly what the machines that rule the world could hope to gain from his resurrection.

Up until the announcement of Keanu Reeves’ return to the role of Neo, it was believed that the character had perished at the end of 2003’s The Matrix Revolutions, the then-final installment in the series. At the end of the third film, Neo allows himself to be corrupted by the malignant Smith program, which gives the machine mainframe in the real world access to Smith’s code. When Smith is subsequently deleted and the Matrix itself reset and restored, Neo’s body is left (presumably) dead in the machine city, and the final shot of Neo in the film sees his corpse being enveloped by smaller machines.

The assumption among viewers was that the machines were preparing to liquefy and consume Neo’s body, just as they did with other humans after their deaths. However, the trailer for The Matrix Resurrections seems to indicate there is much more to the story. As multiple eagle-eyed viewers (including Empire Magazine’s Ben Travis on Twitter) have already discovered, the preview includes a brief glimpse of what very well might be the resurrection of Neo and seems to confirm the fate of his body after the events of The Matrix Revolutions.

As can be seen in the above screenshot, among the many flashing images and clips within the trailer for The Matrix Resurrections is a shot of Neo’s body in the real world. Machines swarm over him, seemingly maintaining the plugs and tubes that are connected to his torso. Neo is submerged in the same thick liquid the machines stored him in while he was plugged into the Matrix, indicating that he’s not only jacked in but once again serving as a power source. The biggest detail in the image is Neo’s blinded eyes, which are still visibly damaged from his fight with a Smith-possessed human in the real world. This confirms the above scene takes place after Neo’s apparent death in Revolutions.

Although a brief and easy-to-miss part of the trailer, this scene answers some questions surrounding The Matrix Resurrections. Not only does it prove that Neo’s return is somehow tied to his body, but it also indicates his survival is due to the machines wanting him alive. However, why exactly they’re doing this — and how they were able to save Neo in the first place — are mysteries that viewers will likely have to wait until the film is released to solve.
