Marvel’s Eternals is reintroducing the giant, godlike spacefaring Celestials to the MCU, and one of the new characters is apparently over 200 miles tall. Scheduled for release on November 5, 2021, Eternals features an ensemble cast that includes Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Harish Patel, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek, and Angelina Jolie. Nomadland director Chloé Zhao is helming the project, which will be the third feature film in Phase 4 of the MCU.

In the Marvel comics, the Celestials are essentially gods — ancient beings of immense power who date back to the early days of the universe. Their experimentations with other life forms led to the creation of the Eternals and the Deviants, as well as the introduction of the mutant x-gene in humans. The Celestials have made a handful of appearances in the MCU — most notably Ego the Living Planet in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 — but after the release of Eternals, it’s likely that they’ll play a much larger role in MCU Phase 4 and beyond.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Speaking during a set visit attended by Screen Rant, Eternals production designer Eve Stewart revealed that one of the new Celestial characters being introduced in the film is a “200 miles high kind of thing. He just walks around planets.” While the MCU has featured some incredibly powerful characters up until this point, the franchise has rarely dealt in characters of the sheer size and power of these new Eternals Celestials. It should be interesting to see them step into action in the film, but their implications for the larger MCU are even more exciting.

Phase 4 has expanded the scope of the MCU dramatically, turning the universes into a boundless multiverse, introducing major villains like Kang the Conqueror, and now, bringing back the Celestials in a major way in Eternals. With the Infinity Stones no longer being the central focus of all power struggles in the franchise, the Celestials could replace them as the strongest force in the universe. If some of the Celestials were to end up being evil, or if they’re turned against the heroes of the MCU somehow, that could lead to some big showdowns in the next Avengers movie, whenever that ends up happening.

With the new Celestials hitting heights that exceed 200 miles, the scale of Marvel’s battles could be growing exponentially. What can even the strongest MCU heroes, like Thor and Captain Marvel, do against the likes of a titanic god? There are no guarantees that the Celestials will become pivotal to the future of the MCU, but their return in Eternals seems full of promise, and it should be exciting to see how it all plays out.
