The Haunting of Bly Manor director Mike Flanagan took to Twitter to announce his upcoming Netflix series The Midnight Club has officially started filming. Flanagan most recently made waves in the horror genre with The Haunting of Hill House, which is based on Shirley Jackson’s novel of the same name, and The Haunting of Bly Manor, which draws from Henry James’s novella The Turn of the Screw. His newest Netflix offering The Midnight Club is a 10-episode adaptation of Christopher Pike’s bestselling book of the same name that tells the story of a group of terminally ill hospice patients who meet up at midnight to tell scary stories.

Although a release date has yet to be confirmed, the upcoming show has officially begun filming. Flanagan tweeted an image of a clapperboard on the set of The Midnight Club with the caption “And we’re off! #day1 #midnightclub to announce the commencement of filming. The first look set image unfortunately doesn’t feature any of The Midnight Club‘s cast, which includes A Nightmare on Elm Street star Heather Langenkamp as the head hospice doctor. Flanagan’s horror background is extensive (from Oculus to Gerald’s Game to Doctor Sleep) and his experience in the genre makes The Midnight Club one of the more highly anticipated upcoming horror releases. His latest project The Haunting of Bly Manor was a bit lackluster considering his previous works, so hopefully the new show will mark a return to form for the director. While viewers await The Midnight Club, they also have Flanagan’s upcoming supernatural horror web series Midnight Mass to look forward to, which is expected to release later in 2021.
