Warning: The following feature contains SPOILERS for Batman #99.

The latest chapter of The Joker War unveiled a new and improved Jokermobile. Like most cars created by or for The Joker, it’s utterly insane and impractical. However, the newest model tops the previous Jokermobiles in how it reflects The Joker’s newfound fortunes and his status as the Clown Prince of Crime and now the undisputed king of Gotham City’s underworld.

It has been said, both in the comics and outside of them, that The Joker is a dark mirror of Batman, who represents a personification of unfettered chaos as much as Batman is a symbol of order and control. To that end, The Joker has often countered Batman’s trademark tools with his own twisted takes on the Dark Knight’s arsenal, such as a mocking parody of Batman’s costume and a utility belt containing itching powder, sneezing powder, and other practical joke items. Yet the most frequent way in which The Joker has tried to counter Batman’s wonderful toys is with a series of Jokermobiles that could match the various Batmobiles in speed, durability, and ingenious gadgetry.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

Earlier chapters of The Joker War saw the Caliph of Clowns seize control of Bruce Wayne’s fortune and assets, turning his henchmen loose on Gotham City in a fleet of spare Batmobiles that had been turned into Jokermobiles. Batman #99 revealed that The Joker had saved the best for last, with a henchman named Abe delivering the latest and greatest Jokermobile ever; one that had been built to The Joker’s exact specifications. In this case, the vehicle was a Hummer limousine, repainted purple and covered with green “HA-HA-HA-HA!” graffiti and bloody red grins. The pièce de résistance was a screen on the back of the limo, playing a loop of The Joker’s laughing face, leaving no doubt as to whom the garish car belonged.

Before returning to Ace Chemical and a planned confrontation with Batman, The Joker was chauffeured around Gotham City by Abe, allowing him a chance to survey his chaotic kingdom. The interior of the vehicle proved to be as nightmarish as the exterior, with custom purple leather seats bedecked with plastic smile insignias. Naturally, there was also a fully stocked bar, allowing The Joker to enjoy a bit of bubbly as he reveled in the chaos he had unleashed before getting back to the serious business of dark comedy.

It remains to be seen if this new Jokermobile will appear in the final chapter of The Joker War or if it has the weaponry to match its luxury. It seems unlikely he’ll be making a speedy getaway, as Hummer limos are usually employed by those who are more concerned with enjoying the high life than moving quickly. On the other hand, with Batman pushed to the brink by recent events and the stakes higher than ever, having a car that can withstand a lot of structural damage may be more important in the long run.
